Possible NYS Active?
    #6050909 - 09/11/06 05:53 PM (17 years, 5 months ago)

I found this growing out of the ground right along the outside of a large stump. I'm completely new to this but my first thought was that maybe it was a liberty cap. Then I was looking at some pics and the outside looked close to conocybe cyanopus but it looked like they maybe have darker colored gills (although I'm not positive). This one obviously has very bright white gills. Is a spore print necessary to identify? If so I'd be glad to.

With practically all mushrooms a spore print is necessary for proper identification. If I were you I'd start doing that now.

From what I know, I would say that isn't psychoactive (if that's what you were hoping) and I know it's not conocybe cyanopus because if I recall correctly, those grow in grassy areas.

Could be another type of conocybe, but it doesn't really look like one in my opinion. It help if you filled out an identification list, like the one found in the identification sticky thread.

Pretty little mushroom. Nothing active however.

Yeah, I thought it was a nice specimen too. It's a shame that you need a spore print to get an id though 'cause I'd much prefer just leaving them in the ground. I wasn't necessarily hoping that it was active. I was just curious. I'm sure it wouldn't have done much by itself even if it was.

I actually did do the whole descriptive list for a couple other id requests that I posted. But the picture on this one came out really well so I figured you could tell most of that stuff from the picture anyway. But the print ended up being white. The cap is about an inch and a half in diameter. The stem is about 3.5-4 inches, long and slender but solid. And there was no bruising noticed.
