Bush assassination film set for U.S. release
Tuesday September 12 12:31 AM ET

After you kill off President George W. Bush in a fictional film, what do you do? How about make a deal.

Gabriel Range, the British producer/director/creator of "Death of a President," the fictional documentary that sight unseen became one of the most talked-about movies of the Toronto Film Festival, has sold U.S. distribution rights to Newmarket Films, which handled Mel Gibson's equally provocative movie "The Passion of the Christ."

Newmarket, which reportedly paid $1 million for the film, is expected to give "President" a wide release within the next few months. It will air on Britain's Channel 4 next month.

Range's film opened on Sunday night to a sell-out festival crowd, which sat respectfully through it and applauded briefly at the end. Those who remained after the screening peppered the filmmaker with questions on how he achieved his special effects.

The film is shot as if it were a conventional television documentary, even though the events are fictional.

Range, who also co-wrote the film, uses footage taken of Bush during three visits to Chicago to create the scenes that lead up top the president being shot.

He also uses special digital effects to superimpose the head of the president on that of an actor pretending to be shot, and he creates a flowery eulogy delivered by President Dick Cheney at the funeral of his predecessor.

The movie opens with demonstrations against Bush as he visits Chicago in 2007. As he leaves a hotel after delivering a speech, he is shot by a sniper in a nearby building.

A police hunt leads to the arrest of a Palestinian man on flimsy evidence. Later the man is convicted of the assassination and kept in prison even as evidence points to another person as having committed the crime.

"The reaction of the general public was very good," Range said in an interview with Reuters about the opening night response.

"People didn't know what to expect. Our film has a very striking premise but it is not sensational or gratuitous. I hope people will see it as a balanced film and compelling drama. It is an oblique look at the ways the United States has changed since 9/11. We use the lens of the future to explain the past."

The 93-minute film's subject matter has led to protests in the United States, especially from conservatives. Range said he has received five or six death threats.

But he said that was because there was a rush to judgment about his film, without people knowing what was in it.

"We portrayed the horror of assassination. ... I don't think anyone would get the idea of assassinating Bush from this film," Range said.

Bush 'Death' Drama Aired at Toronto Fest
Monday September 11 7:04 PM ET

A sellout crowd at the Toronto International Film Festival gave a warm reception to the British TV movie "Death of a President," which centers on a fictionalized assassination of George W. Bush. The audience applauded at the end and several more times during a question-and-answer session with the filmmakers.

"I really liked it. It seemed very real. It was hard to believe the people were acting. I found myself mesmerized," said Linda Walsh, a real-estate broker from Mill Valley, Calif., who said she is not a Bush supporter.

"I'm always hoping when anything like this comes out that it will cause people that perhaps haven't thought about things to think about them," Walsh said. "About the war, about the Patriot Act, about our judicial system."

Director Gabriel Range told the crowd afterward that he doesn't believe "Death of a President" would incite anyone to attempt an assassination.

"I think the film makes it clear it would really be a horrific event. There have been plenty of fictional films about assassinations, so this is not the first in that sense," said Range, noting that Michael Douglas' recent Secret Service thriller "The Sentinel" opens with footage of the attempt on President Ronald Reagan's life.

"I really don't think that anyone would get the idea of assassinating Bush from this film."

The film, which premiered Sunday night at the festival, is slated to run Oct. 9 on More4, the digital offshoot of Britain's Channel 4 network. The movie chronicles the sniper shooting of Bush on Oct. 19, 2007, during a trip to Chicago for a speech on the economy. It includes interviews with actors playing Secret Service and FBI officials, White House aides, journalists and anti-war activists, along with suspects and their relatives.

The film plays out like whodunit on a grand scale, tracing the twists and turns of the investigation against the backdrop of the continuing Iraq war, an expansion of the Patriot Act to give federal authorities greater powers of surveillance, and other fallout from the Sept. 11 attacks.

"It is using the lens of the future to look at the present," Range told the premiere audience. "It is about issues that have affected us all in the last five years. It is a film about America today."

The filmmakers were at the Toronto festival looking for U.S. distributors.

"Death of a President" blends archival footage of Bush interspersed with fierce anti-war protests and other fictional scenes crafted by the filmmakers. Actors posing as administration officials and Secret Service agents were digitally grafted into some images of the president and his entourage.

Bush is struck by two bullets fired by a sniper from a 20th story window as the president is shaking hands with people outside a hotel after his speech. The president dies after surgery at a hospital, and Vice President Dick Cheney is sworn in.

The rest of the film tracks events over the following months as a Syrian man is put on trial, with the investigation recalling the John F. Kennedy assassination as authorities debate whether the suspect was a lone gunman or part of an al-Qaeda conspiracy.

The investigation and the officials behind it come under scrutiny themselves as the case takes a radical turn.

The filmmakers said they chose to use Bush rather than substitute a fictitious president to heighten the authenticity.

"The central conceit of the film was that it is a drama, but told in the style of what we hope is a fairly authentic, classic, retrospective documentary," said producer Simon Finch, who co-wrote the screenplay with Range. "Clearly, if we had told a retrospective documentary with a fictional president, it would have undermined and undercut that central idea."

In an interview with Reuters, he declined to give details but said a deal could be announced before the end of the week. The film is set to air on Britain's Channel 4 in October as well as be distributed on DVDs and in cinemas.

wow . . interesting stuff. I remember once, the prez was speaking in my city. I could see him addressing the crowd from the top floor of my work building. I watched him for a good 20 minutes.

I know it is morbid, but I mentioned to a coworker that anyone in the building could pick this guy off with a 40 dollar rifle from kmart. I always thought that when a president speaks in a town that they "secure" the area and whatnot.

Is it that they have the public so scared that they dont even worry about that shit anymore? Or did they have people with radars and binoulars and sniper rifles covering the area? Who knows . .

Love him or hate him he's the President and the office deserves some respect.

Frankly, I think it's a bunch of bullshit.

And that's all the time I plan on spending on the film.

I tried looking around to see if there was anyone on nearby rooftops. I even used some opera glasses that were laying around.

lol that reminds me, after I said that to my coworker, he joked and tried to convince me there was a red laser dot on my forehead.

This is stupid in my opinion......has there EVER been a movie made about an American President's assassination, while he is still in office???????

How about if one was made about Clinton while he was in office????

respect should always be earned, not just granted because of your power position.

Read more carefully.
I said the office deserves respect.

There is a difference.

And I guess no one has noticed my avatar.
I'm certainly no fan of George Bush.

Regardless thank God for the 1st while it lasts. Also the feeling that I get from this is more that of a social commentary. You haven't seen it so how do you know that it is necessarily disrespectful? His office is a symbol within the film and he is used for artistic effect.

I havnt read this thread yet but Im reminded of a guy I work with...

His name is ED and he is white..  Seriously. (people in socal would laugh at that)

Ed is a former Marine and even has a Bush Cheney bumper sticker on his truck along with semper fi and USMC stickers.

On Sept 11th I tested the waters and asked him what he thought about the comspiracy theories?

He said "What Conspiracy theories"?

Seriously he has NEVER bothered to see another side of the entire ordeal, he completely ate up the entire Bush story for what happened..

I only tried once to say something about the buildings falling down straight like a controlled demolition and never even got to mention building 7 before he interrupetd me and got angry that I might even think that this had something to do with our government, Bush and the Republican Party..

Now I know what Middle America feels like..  With the Republicans controlling the churches, media and human thought.

Only thing is, anyone who actually thought it through wouldn't want to pick off W, because that would leave Cheney first in command.

Watched this last night. Must say the only thing going for it was the controversy and some clever digital editing, and thats nothing special these days.

The most original thing they could think up for the political fall-out was Patriot III (yawn), the acting was unconvincing. A really unremarkable film.

Yeah I watched it too, I turned it off near the end. It was just incredibly boring, most of the acting was as hammy as George.
