September 11th, 2001, that day, in my life.
    #6049311 -

Did you watch it on TV, or listen on the radio, or did the whole morning pass under the radar for you? I figure since this is the five year anniversary, and that is not an arbitrary thing what with the mathematical and physical realities of the cyclical nature of the universe, that I should take a moment to reflect upon my own interactions with the event known as September 11th, two thousand and one. This is the internet, where we can laugh at everything, but I remember how it chilled me to the bone.

I was here, in New York City, and that morning my roommate and I were getting dressed and ready for class in our fourteenth floor dorm room on Washington Square when we heard a distinctly loud *clap.* Our bedroom window faced south straight towards the World Trade Center but we didn't even look there - Sasha, a girl who lived next door to us, let out a scream and we ran to see what was going on.

She was pointing out her own window, at what was clearly a large flaming hole in the side of one of the towers. We turned on the TV, and CNN was yammering about exactly what we all assumed was going on - someone flying a small commuter jet had crashed into the WTC. You could see flames jumping out of the hole, I filmed it a little and have since lost that particular tape, regrettably. We watched for a bit, calming down Sasha (a fragile jap of a girl), and then my roommate Dan and I went downstairs for breakfast.

In the time it took us to eat breakfast, the second plane hit - I never found out, not till much later. We left the cafeteria and went our separate ways to class. I walked over to Cooper Square, where I had a 9:30 Italian class. It was around 9:45 or so when a janitor burst into the classroom, exclaiming:

"Terrorists have bombed the Twin Towers and the Pentagon! They're evacuating downtown! Everyone needs to calmly evacuate the building and start walking uptown."

At the time i still had notions of being some great renegade filmmaker so I did what any respectable renegade would do - I whipped out my miniDV camera which I always kept on me, went outside with everyone else, and started walking downtown. Whatever was happening, I wanted to witness it. I filmed people as I went, their faces streaming towards me, a mix of anguish and confusion, and a palpable amount of fear was hanging in the air.

Far down the length of the Bowery you could see smoke rising from the Towers. The entire city was awash with the sounds of emergency; the overhead buzzing of police and news helicopters, the endless moaning and swelling of sirens near and far as they raced downtown towards unforeseeable destruction, the screams and cries of human beings overwhelmed by panic as they sought to escape something they could not comprehend.

I was filming all this, and I walked into the middle of the avenue. Traffic had stalled, the police had seen to that, and I walked freely along the double yellow line, filming the towers as they sent plumes of smoke up into the air. And then the yellow battery icon started blinking on my LCD, and BATT LOW blinked beneath it, and my camera died.

And I looked at it in disbelief, and maybe it happened for a reason, because what I saw next was one of the realest things I've ever witnessed. And rather than witness it through the lens of a camera I saw it with my own eyes and it changed something inside of me forever. I looked up and I saw the first tower drop. I was about 25 or 30 blocks away, and so it was completely silent, and almost graceful. It just looked like legos melting away into dust.

Slowly and silently, and decidedly, the building slipped away and left behind nothing but dust and ash. I stared and stared and stared, and as the smoke cloud grew larger and larger, I realized it was time to walk uptown. I made it to my dorm in time to join my roommates at the television and the southern window where we could still see tower 1, which was still standing. Just as my roommate Doug was telling me he had seen people committing suicide through his binoculars, the tower dropped.

95 percent of my dorm's occupants went home, or home with people who lived nearby on the eastern seaboard. But I stayed that whole week. I couldn't bear to leave. Those who left were visitors to this city, here for education and drinking and experience. To me this was home, and I couldn't comprehend what had happened to my home.

The air was thick with dust, and breathing was difficult, but that night we walked the empty streets of Manhattan for hours. One does not get an opportunity to see an empty, quiet Manhattan very often. Only in scenes like the opening to Vanilla Sky do we ever get to see an silent, barren Times Square. I saw these things.

And I don't care to ever see them again. This city is my pulse. And 9/11 sent a hiccup through the blood of the metropolis. Everything stopped, and stuttered, and stammered, and this city...this city doesn't stutter. It just goes, and it grinds. It walks all over people, too, but you can find ways of keeping pace with it, of finding a way through the maze.

I am trying not to let the simple fact of time detach me from all I witnessed. But I also refuse to give in to grief or worry or panic or nervousness. When a friend got through to my phone that morning, all I could say to him, in my half-delirious state was,

"This is the most awe-some thing I've ever witnessed."

He screamed at me...awesome, he said? Awesome? How can you say that? But I meant the word in its truest meaning. The event inspired awe in me...a desperate cry for attention, maybe it was. But no, we can look at it that way or we can see it as a grand expression of hate. Either way, it is not something easily forgotten.

I have no need for these movies they release now all about 9/11. I don't think it needs a movie. I don't think anything so real has happened in the greater landscape of my life, and maybe I've no interest in these films simply because I saw it all for myself. All you need to see are those two planes hitting those two buildings. And all you need to know is that at two in the morning, this city was close to being pronounced dead. People scattered through the streets like errant weeds, detached dandelions blowing down Broadway, running down the avenues and streets while Hummers patrolled, the entire island of Manhattan turned into a military quarantine. Never again, I hope, never again.

Because September 11 is my "birth day," though, in "reality" I am as old as the Universe and all it's constituted atoms!

Spent the next several days mostly in front of the T.V. in a sort of numb shock.

I happened to ditch class that day and was watching television when the breaking news came in. I saw the second plane hit live on tv, and I watched both towers fall. It was astonishing. I cannot imagine being in New York that day and seeing it happen first hand. What a terrible day that was..

I was sleeping off the previous night's drunk and my mom called and told me to turn on the news. By that time it was all overwith and everything had collapsed.

It was then that I knew Bush had done it and that we were heading into a major war, and that the process of the end of the world had begun.

I was in class that day when someone came in and said a plane hit WTC tower 1. We moved to a classroom with a working TV and we all watched in disbelief as the second plane nailed tower 2. A cold chill went up my spine as the first tower collapsed and I remember turning to a classmate and saying "holy shit....there must be a few thousand people in there." I still shudder when I see footage on TV of the whole thing.

thanks for sharing your experience.

I was here in Chicago when it happened and we were evacuated from our building. I understand your love of NYC just as I love my city. I cannot imagine that happening here.

That Tuesday will always haunt me. My parents were flying while the attack happened and we could not reach them all day. Remember how cell phones were down? They took off from Boston and their flight was diverted to Toronto and they were safe, but we did not know that. All day, we did not know if my parents were alive or dead. They could have been on one of the planes.

My girlfriend at the time was from NYC and knew two people who worked in the towers. One survived, one did not.

My friend (and current roommate) had a cousin who also died in NYC.

Goddamn, that must have been terrible...the suspense, oy. My cousin's mom (er, my aunt I guess) left late for work that morning, and she worked in the WTC. So many little stories like that, such a testament to the randomness of it all...

The cell phone thing had people in such a panic, because the strongest transmitter in the city was atop one of the two towers, the only way I got through to anyone was that at the time for some reason I had a Nextel and I could still use the walkie talkie feature.

i remember being on the bus to school, and when i was getting off over the radio i heard that a plane had crashed into the world trade center. Since i live on the west coast and my whole life was raised as thinking of the wtc as just the twin towers it wasnt till somebody said "another plane the other tower that i realized what was happening. I remember going to my first class of the day (japanese) and nobody in the room knew what was happening and i just said "hey can we turn the tv on real quick?" and then we started seeing images of what happened.

The wierd thing looking back on it is that west coast time is 3 hours behind new york time. but for some reason i remember the events as they took place even though both the towers had already fallen long before i was ever awake. i can only explain this by all the tv i watched that day probably left my with the impression i saw the 2nd tower get hit as it happened and both of them fall.

Just a quick side question, does anybody else find it really wierd when watching pre-2001 movies of nyc to see the towers in them? For example about a week ago my roomate and i where watching Die Hard 3, and there is a scene where samuel is just staring up at the towers for a split secound. I remember i looked over at my roomate to say something and he was just staring back at me, and i dont really think either one of us could figure out the right was to say what we were feeling.

I just hope that the the friends and families of the victims can perhaps find some solace in the fact that all of america is probably sending out prayers for them. And that this never happens again, to anybody in the world

Wow.  That was a really great post, OMR.

I was working in a factory in Toronto that day.  My ex had just left the day prior for his military basic training.  There were A LOT of arabs working in this building and there were all kinds of fights and a wicked insugence of racism.

We watched the whole thing on TV in the cafeteria.  A lot of the women were crying.  :frown:

yes, it was scary. we did not know what flight they were on or any other specific information other than "flying out of boston early in the morning." We must have called their cell phones about 200 times and the airline operators 200 times.

I first heard about the attacks when my brother-in-law called me and said "have you heard from your parents yet?!? We cannot reach them..."

they finally called us later that evening. about 6pm, if I remember correctly.

I live out west, so needless to say I was less affected than most. when I first heard about the crashes it was from some stranger I passed in the hall. he was talking to his friends and he said something along the lines of "some idiot crashed a plane into the world trade centers! how dumb do you have to be to hit a building that size?"
I already thought he was an asshole for making a joke about it (although I didn't know it was an attack yet, I believed him that it was an accident, because I had no other information), but when I arrived in my first period class and saw the girl who sits next to me with tears streaming down her face I knew something far more severe than a mistake was going on.
we turned on the news in the class and heard that the second tower had already been hit, and as we watched, it collapsed, just then the girl burst into tears even louder and told me "my dad works in that tower..." I've never seen a face to sad, and so defeated as that girls face, who just saw her dad perish on live tv... my heart just deflated for this poor girl.
I wish I could say her dad got out in time, but he did not... the rest of that day is just a blur to me, everyone in school was in shock, none of my classes did anything productive, and there were more tears than I could believe.

I woke up that morning to get ready for class (I was in college at the time). I turned on the tv and flipped on the news channel while I was getting ready for class and the first plane had just smashed into the tower a few minutes before. I was just kind of shocked; they still didn't know if it was intentional and were speculating that it might have been a navigation error. Of course, I was glued to the tv after that and managed to catch a live shot of the second plane crashing into the towers. I dragged myself into class, and for the rest of the day, there was a radio on in every room. I heard about the pentagon crash shortly after, the towers falling, and then they announced that George W. Bush was being whisked away to MY SLEEPY MIDWEST CITY for protection. I didn't like the sound of that one bit.

The next few weeks were a blur of news reports and more shock.

I wish I could go into more detail on how this event has affected me since then, but I don't have time right now.

i was in the air force at the time, we had a parents day (which we were working hard to get togather for a while) and it was noone when all the perents left. i was annaxed to the clinic and my comending officer was the chife doctor of the air base.
having the day off from normal things he took the time to have some fillings done on his teeth or something and all the rest of the sinior staff was with him jokeing around about the day...

i remember walking in to the dentist office to ask one of them something when i saw the TV (no one was paying attention to it, but it looked like what i thought might be "a cool movie to watch on my free time right now") it took me a couple of seconds to process what i was actualy seeing on the screen... i frantically left the office and turned on the TV at the hall, pretty soon all the staff congragated around the TV in shock.

the first few minuts felt like WW3 was coming, with all the confused ramblings of the press and the feeling like anything can happen... we watched as the second plain hit and the two towers fell.. i shed some tears, felt chills through out my body (i get chills just writing this!)

later when there was nothing alse to do but listen to the baffeled reports and nothing alse could be said i felt like i had to get out... i had to get away from the idea that anything like that could happen. i went to some movie that was showing in our cinema, very few others showed up that day. of course it didn't help take my mind off it though.

that's pretty much all i remember from that night (i probably watched the TV late into the night untill i had to go to sleep)

thanks for sharing your expiriances everyone...

I hate that people are automatically written off as loonies when they cry conspiracy. Hitler did this exact same thing in the late 20's early 30's before he went nuts. Google "Hitler's Enabling Act," and all the events that surrounded it.

Now compare that to the Patriot Act and all the events that surrounded that. Eerily similar.

I couldn't get my head around the multiple planes bit. I hit the TV and it was on most channels. We all know those images. I spent most of that day taking it all in, zapping between Dutch, Belgian, German, British and American stations, comparing stories.

9/11 changed the world far beyond its magnitude.

It's amazing that you saw both towers fall. I could see the smoke but thats about it.

It was the first week of my freshman year of high school. I had just come from a shitty public middle school to a very competitive High school and I remember earlier in the day agonizing about how the work was kicking my ass. At some point I had started hearing rumors about how a bomb blew up the world trade center, and that you could see the smoke from somewhere in the building. (The school was in Brooklyn but it was nine tall stories high.)

After that class was over, I snuck up on the roof and watched the smoke from across the water. It took awhile for the breadth of what had really happened to penetrate for me. At first, I was just relived that I had an extra day to catch up on my work. I cut out of school about half way through the day figuring nobody would care because of the panic. That night watching the news with my mother, I began to realize the effect that this would have on the United States, and on the world.

I remember waking up for school like I always did. It was such a shock to go from, "Shit I gotta go to school," to, "Shit, I hope nobody else dies today." There's nothing that can really explain that feeling of loss and confusion, although at the time I'd have to admit that I was pretty numb to the whole situation. It's hard to put words to the feeling of watching that second plane hit the tower over breakfast. We moved the TV out of the kitchen after that.

The story goes, or the way that I was told
There was a king that always felt too high and then he fell too low
And so he called all the wise men to the hall
And begged them for a gift to end the rises and the falls
But here’s the thing, they came back with a ring
It was simple and was plainly unbefitting of a king
Engraved in black, it had no front or back
But there were words around the band that said
Just know: This Too Shall Pass

It was my freshman year of college. I had been in school for a little over two weeks, when the phone rang a little after 6 in the morning(PST). It was my roommate's girlfriend, telling him that planes had been flown into the world trade center. He told me about it too, and immediately woke me up from my state of grogginess. I stayed glued to the TV for the rest of the day, while my roommate, who was from New York, was calling friends to make sure they were still alive. None of his friends had died, but his dad had lost a few friends in the attacks. It took a while for the whole thing to sink in. I started wondering how they pulled it off. I was hoping for an investigation to figure out if someone on the inside had assisted the terrorists(and was surprised at how few other people were suggesting such a thing at the time). One thing I knew for sure was that this would be the defining moment of my generation.

Re: September 11th, 2001, that day, in my life. [Re: Silversoul]

The night b4 my friends took me out for a bday dinner. I was entering my senior year in college and was in between apts so my g/f and I were crashing on a matress a buddy had for a couch in Baltimore. I decided to sleep in and skip my 9am business class.

At 930 or so my friends came home, kicked me saying "School's closed. We're under attack".

A paranoid friend of mine earlier that week was ranting about how he thought the Chinese were going to try to take us over because, as you all remember, this was right after our spy plane went down off the coast of China.

So the first thing I thought waking up to the words "We're under attack" was that the Chinese had landed in DC/Baltimore. My buddy threw on the tv. I think it was right before the first tower crumbled.

I was in Atlanta, watching TV in the morning before going to work. We were worried about being 2 miles from the Center for Disease Control, a definite target. I actually had my four track recorder out at the time and made song about it while watching Dan Rather et al. Later went to work but noone wanted to eat out that day, everyone was watching TV.

OMR - I like your use of the word awesome, I'm sure being t so close was certainly awe-inspiring. Just watching it on TV was a pretty intense experience for most folks...

Very true you see the Towers in almost any movie situated in New York, and every time I see them I get memories from that day.

I watched "world trade center" tonight. Good flick. Brought out a lot of emotions. Saw flight 93 when it came out. Talk about heavy. When the curtain went down, everybody in the theater was holding there breath. It took a few minutes for anyone to get up, and leave.

I was taking my girlfriend at the time to court for her cousin's hearing. I remember going into the court and it was closed, I turned on the raidio and it was all on the radio stations.... it was crazy, but big deal, the rest of the world hates the the USA because of president Bush starting a war in Iraq, me made shit so much worse for the whole world...world peace will never happen anytime soon....I hate greedy republicans, definately ones from Texas...

Shockingly similar..

People who point the finger at an argument and cry "conspiracy" are in a sense the ones on lower ground. With all the questions raised by the alternative theorists and all the observations and documented evidence they lay on the table, the other group who supports the official version of nine-eleven does everything to deny the claims made but presents not a single piece of counter-evidence. All they do in defense is call everyone who disagrees with them a "conspiracy nut" and sometimes even make a threat by calling you a "terrorist".

I'm not going to contribute to sympathy for the victims and their families here, i do that in my own heart everyday..

Instead i will post a commentary that was written in response to the current state of affairs we are dealing with on this five year anniversary of 9/11, its dangers if we stay ignorantly on course, and the possible plans to throw King George off his throne and begin to help recover the injuries made to Lady America and Gaia.

That's all.
