American Nation marks 9/11 fifth anniversary
Five years after terrorists wrought death from clear skies, Americans began their observation of a solemn anniversary Monday, with plans for silent reflection and fresh mourning for the nearly 3,000 lives lost on Sept. 11, 2001
President Bush says he and his wife, Laura, face September 11, 2006 "with a heavy heart." They spent Sunday in New York, laying wreaths at Ground Zero on reflecting pools where the north and south towers of the World Trade Center once stood. They attended a prayer service, then a surprise- they greeted firefighters who suddenly found themselves standing face to face with the president.
One year after the attacks, Bush also visited each site, tearfully embracing family members and delivering symbol-laden speeches from the Pentagon and New York's Ellis Island. But the president hasn't taken that tack since, choosing to observe the anniversaries largely without fanfare.
There were also moments of silence set for 8:46 a.m. in the American and United terminals of Logan International Airport in Boston. American Airlines Flight 11 and United Airlines Flight 175 took off from Logan before slamming into the towers.
Bush also planned a prime-time address from the Oval Office.
Bush calls the anniversary "a day of renewing resolve" and says he's vowed to never "forget the lessons of that day." He talked about what it's like to attend services with those who lost loved ones that day, and how he wished there was some way, "we could make them whole again."
This year, it will be Vice President Dick Cheney who will remain in Washington to perform those duties. Bush, meanwhile, is spending nearly 24 hours traveling from New York's ground zero to the Pennsylvania field where Flight 93 was diverted from its murderous intentions into the ground to the rebuilt Pentagon wall where another hijacked jetliner pierced the most enduring symbol of American military might.
Bush aides say the two days of events, and the speech, have no political agenda, despite the congressional elections in November that will determine if the president's Republican Party retains control of Congress.
Democrats say Bush has been distracted by Iraq from real security needs, such as inspecting more cargo at U.S. ports and reducing the vulnerability of high-value targets like chemical plants.

Actually, I think Bush has attended every anniversary since. If he didn't, it would have been all over the news.

For five years, the deaths of innocent americans have been viewed as a resource ready to be mined by every asshole politician with half a brain.
I honestly refuse to commemorate the occasion anymore, it plays right into the bullshit that's obfuscated every last trace of well-meaning remembrance.

I'd say both sides of the political spectrum have pretty much politicized every life that was lost that day. It will probably be decades before 9/11 is commemorated without political entanglements. Just today I heard some people on the bus talk about it, and it quickly turned into a Left versus Right discussion.

No, he didn't come out on previous 9/11's, he kept pretty quiet the last few years on this day.
