New Guy needs a couple quick tips
    #6044900 - 09/09/06 08:15 PM (18 years, 4 months ago)

I've been gathering all the equipment I'll need, thinking I would just do a simple cake tek without a pressure cooker. Well, now I have just a little extra money, and I can afford that pressure cooker, so:

Does it matter whether I buy an Aluminum or Steel cooker? What's the....difference between the two?

Also, a question you probably get alot; are any specific strains more fool-proof than others? What's a good strain to start with for a newbie like me? I was told B+ is pretty good, but I'd like to hear from a few more people.

Also, in all the teks I've read, vermiculite is used. Is there an alternative to vermiculite? I was able to purchase some, but the garden store told me they're clearing it out, and don't plan to carry it any longer after it's gone.

get a nice big cheap PC off ebay

my favorite strain so far has been amazon/amazonian. very hardy and forgiving, and faster colonization than B+, which is notorious for slow colonization.

buy the vermiculite while you can..buy them out!

OK heres my opinion

On ebay you can purchase a top knotch pressure cooker USED,

I would suggest only 1 real namebrand if your looking to have reliable and maintenence free results. My suggestion would be an ALL AMERICAN pressure cooker... When i say all american im talking of the namebrand.

The difference btween an all american cooker is that all americans are literally built for a lifetime... They dont need any replacement parts, and they dont use a rubber gasket like most other cookers do. It also includes a steam gauge that shows how many punds of pressure you are pushin...
Alot of the cheaper ones dont include a gauge and also use a cheap counterwight to regulate pressure.

The better cookers will feature a THICK aluminum construction , with inner racks and a metal liner that protects your jars from sitting firctly on the bottom, they will have a gauge so you can see how many psi the cooker is at, and usually a regulator valve and a blow port...

A better cooker such as an all american 21.5 quart cooker which can accomodate a bunch of quart jars and even more smaller jars... I personally got mine for 50 bux plus shipping. It works just fine.

You can use a smaller cooker that costs musch less and probably uses the rubber gasket i was talking about, but if you plan on using it alot I would keep extra gaskets on hand, and constantly keep the gaskets greased.. The gasket is essentially what creates the seal on the cheaper cookers while the all american cookers use a metal to metal seal.

just some more info i thought should be added.

If you have any questions feel free to PM
