"The guitar solo is dead"
    #6016286 - 08/31/06 08:45 PM (14 years, 4 months ago)

Ah cool little read.

http://www.cbc.ca/arts/music/guitarsolos.html

Now I know there's all the death metal bands and shit that solo a million miles and hour... but I think he's trying to get at mainstream bands that reach much larger audiences.

It was dead. Like the article said, it was killed in the 90s. Thru the nu-metal era, and now its starting to come back. You probably won't hear any on whatever radio rock band is popular right now though. (I avoid pop culture like the plauge) On Slipknots latest CD they have tracks with solos. Newer bands like Trivium, Dragonforce (the king of solos!) Lamb of God, Avenged Sevenfold, and Black Label Society all use the solo in their songs still. You could argue that those bands are underground...and while they arn't as common as Nicklecrack, they are definatly NOT underground. It may be all but gone from radio rock, but theres really only a handful of good radio rock bands to begin with. Personally it really doesn't bother me that its not a "trendy" thing. I would rather people appreciate the solo for its definaitive feel, and the demand of a good guitar player. If people are content with their 4 chord, verse/chorus/verse/chorus/bridge/chorus song structre then by all means let them do as they please. So basically, I would agree with this article if it was written in 98 - 00 era, but in other, less prominent forms of rock music it has claimed its place once again.

Good read, thanks for posting it.

Slayer pull off some mighty solos in my opinion

On the topic of underground/mainstream, I would just like to add that Satellite Radio is the best thing to happen to music in a loong time.

That's how I found out about Wolfmother before they were really known in North America. Liked their song Woman, bought tickets to their show before I bought a CD.

Needless to say I bought their CD after the show! it fuck rocked

anyways, slight highjack

While off topic slightly, with the whole guitar solo, what about all the sick ass rifts that older bands had. Think Black Sabbath ( Or Ozzy when he seperated from Black Sabbath ), Iron Maiden, Twisted Sister, Metallica, Rats, ect . They had some SICK ass guitar rifts which you don't hear that often in today's nu-metal

I thought that the phrase "nu-metal" was entirely dead, so I'm not sure why you must persist in using it.

I was using it to differenciate( spelling? ) between the oldschool metal and modern metal

solos are overrated in my opinion. if there is just a solo for the solo's sake, that is just stroking the guitarists ego. if it suits the song, then by all means, go for it.

Modern metal seems to be an appropriate term, but I feel as though using any such terms falsely represents the metal scene.

For instance, all of the great metal bands that have inspired these currently known, touring bands were playing in different areas of the world, such as Scandanavia, while the whole "nu-metal" thing was going on.

My point is that there is no line to be drawn, there is simply "metal" (and even that is debatable), and individual bands that create the musikk that they have been inspired to create.

The whole label thing is a false dichotomy. The media seeks out the next big scene, and then creates this imaginary struggle that bands must go through when they release new work and how it differs from the scene in which they started, and etc. etc. etc. Its all hype and its unnecessary.

Whether or not it suits the song is a personal judgement, just as much as whether or not the chorus suits the song. Frankly, if the band decided to have a solo in the song, then they feel it suits the song, and its their song.

Not to mention the fact that most solos are over a theme from somewhere else in the song. I don't understand what the guitarist's "ego" has to do with it.

A guitar solo is an expression by the artist, even if it is insanely fast and complex. Surely, there are bad, tasteless solos, just as there is an overwhelming sea of bad, tasteless musikk.

The whole "guitar solos are dead, no, now they are being revived, solos shouldn't be in the song unless they fit the song, etc. etc. etc. ad infinitum" is ridiculous.

I feel like going to a school chorus recital and screaming at the child who has a solo piece within the song "You are just stroking your damned ego! Only sing a solo if it fits the song!".

You're right about the whole "nu-metal" term. It's far too vague and is generally used as an insult against certain metal bands.
Also, it doesn't apply to every new (not nu) metal band that is around - it applies to a certain style of metal, but it's tricky to define exactly who falls into this category. Then again, it was such a silly "genre" name in the first place.
It's easy enough to differentiate between and old and new metal band simply by using the terms "old metal band" and "new (not nu) metal band".

Also, the guitar solo isn't dead. Some bands choose not to use them, some bands can't play them well enough (so don't try) or prefer to use tones instead.
It also depends what music you listen to.

When I hear nu-metal, I think of bands like Disturbed.........

and honestly I can't think of another band. Just goes to show how "sucessful" that genre was. Obviously it was created by record companies to hopefully generate a new trend, new music, new sales, new profits. Ya know.

As for a final IMO of solos.

Sure you can say solos are dead. Others will argue it is well and alive, just out of the spotlight. But in the music world we live in today, if it doesn't sell hundreds of thousands of copies... it's a failure. So the solo is taking a break. Insult it all you want. But I just gotta say. If it's cock rocking, a male thing.... HOW COME THEY SOUND SO FUCKING GOOD?

The solo has a place in music. But I also agree that rock is dead.

I hope that made sense. Because this vodka sure does.

adamj- That's Gir.

i am a guitarist of sorts and i love the guitar solo. there are lots of kick ass bands that still play solos, and those who don't, well they mostly suck. solos aren't required in a great song, but songs with only a rhythm part are BORING. good tracks need some lead, some melody or something that is tickles my brain in the audio fashion for me to consider them worth listening to. there are a million generic, boring, lifeless bands out there, mostly on the radio, that i would like to verbally abuse. i am very open minded with music, but suck is suck.

i have the utmost respect for musicians, and a much lesser appreciation for those who are solely entertainers who are out for record sales alone. that is one way i think of nu-metal vs actual metal. anyhow, most "normal" people only like simple music by flashy pop-douche bags and really have no knowledge of music at all. i meet these people at work and when the speak i laugh at them. it isn't worth explaining it to them because they don't get it anyway.

for those who i just offended: sorry, i guess i am rather opinionated on the subject. i am sure you are still good people.

i still don't agree with you fireworks. what i meant by stroking the ego is that, some guitarists are amazing technically, and they know it, so they just throw out solos everywhere they can possibly imagine, and the rest of the band knows this too, so they go along with him/her. then, in turn, these solos end up sounding terrible, out of place, and sound exactly like the guitarist is just "jerking off" on stage just for the sake of showing off. TO ME, that isn't what a solo should be, and that is all I hear these days coming from soloists.

yes, that is my opinion, but aren't we all basically throwing out our opinions here?

let me guess that was written by some huge led zeppelin/jimi hendrix fan over the age of 40

Just like those people who say todays music sucks. You gotta look for it and the mainstream isnt the best place to find it.

Shit there is some awesome guitar music out there, you just gotta find it.
