the mystery of yawning, how i lost the ability to do it.

Ok so ive read a few of the threads on yawning but it doesnt seem that anybody addressed anything but the materialist points of it...which dont seem to answer much anyway. Actually scientists dont seem to really know for sure why we do it. But I'm sure youve all experienced the barrage of yawns youll have when your tripping. Thats how i became so interested in it. Another unexpolained phenomena connected with mushrooms. In one of the yawn threads on this site someone said about something about a connection with seritonin and yawning. Which plays a large role in the psychedelic experience too. This does make alot of sense though once you get into that your kind of in a similar territory. Seritonin is quite mysterious in itself, besides whats happening chemically that is. Has anyone gone through a period of inability to yawn? I have! Im actually just learning to yawn again! I went through a period of social phobia, which im still grappling with actually, and through this period, I wasnt able to yawn. I didnt realize this at first. I cant actaully rememeber that if at first my body didnt need to yawn, or that if i was really yawning, and just not rememembering. I came to realize it once when i was tripping on dxm actually. At the end of the trip i was yawning like crazy and then realized (or just thought) i havent yawned in forever! somehow i felt like i was healing my social anxiety by yawning. I didnt really think much of it though, it slipped my mind along with many other relevations ive had tripping. So again I didnt keep track of my yawning, So i could have been yawning after this, or my body just didnt ever singnal me to do it. Thennnnnnn i was tripping with my brother on morning glories. this was the first time i had the urge to yawn really bad but couldnt! Id feel the yawn coming and get a quarter way through, and then couldnt. And my brother who doenst have social problems like me couldnt either! We tried for like half an hour . And we were determined to do it, it felt like a test of our brotherhood. That brings up one of the wierdest parts of yawning, which is the contagiousnous of it. but this was even weirder because it was our inability to sneeze that was contagious. I think if one of us pulled off a yawn the other would be able to also, but we never did. The idea came to one of us go outside or in a different room and try to do it alone, but we decided not to for some reason. After this i couldnt yawn for a long time. and it was annoying because half yawning is kind of like half sexing. no satisfaction. part of me believes that what was stopping me was my selfconciousness. Not in that i felt like i looked stupid yawning, cuz i couldnt do it alone either. something much deeper, like my mind is conflicted. I do believe its very much connected with my social anxiety. SO Lately ive been learnign to meditate, and am embracing alot of the things mushrooms have told me, and im doing very well! I feel like im coming back out of my reclusive ways, and along with that im learning to yawn again. It actually takes alot of tries, but each time i get closer and closer to a full yawn. I always have to build up to them lately but at least im getting some good wholesome yawns. in the shower the other day i had a HUGE one. I dont think it was my full potential of a yawn but I actually felt some really trippy feelings through this yawn! felt kind of like peaking... the yawn lasted a while, the feeling was an instant. I believe there is something mystical or spiritual about the nature of yawning. I remember reading that the reason people covered their mouth when yawning, was originally to keep the soul from escaping the body. It actually feels like something is being released to me. Whether its tension, or something else i dont know. Ive had about 10 really good yawns through typing this . I still feel like i could have better yawns than these, but also this new awareness of them makes me appreciate them more.

yea thats a pretty cool thread.
reminds me of something else actually. when i goto take a pee when im tripping, i get that shaking feeling and sometimes my knees even buckle. then many times ill just laugh. like a feeling of ultimate relief or something. not even sure what im laughing about so what it? anyone know what im talking about there? feels like it symbolizes something but im not sure what.
never really felt mystified by sneezing though.
O yea and did anybody else ever go through a time where they couldnt yawn? kind of a weird problem

I totally know what you're saying about being unable to yawn and it sucks. I discovered that there's a way to kake it happen but I'm not exactly sure how to explain. Basically it's about holding your breath and opening your mouth and try to "inhale" through your mouth whyle you're still holding your breath. It works almost all the time for me...

sneezing and yawning and farting seem to be related...
a new born babe will sneeze if you sprinkle pepper on them.
they will fart depending on waht you feed them.
and they will yawn when they are tired...
the essence is to return to the state you where delivered in

I hear you there, that they all seem to be methods of release, or relief of something. But what is yawning relieving? It doesnt seem to make you less tired. There is definately a sense of satisfaction in it, much like stretching. mabey thats why they come together. But i think their is more than a physical sense of satisfaction. Their is something happening their in the mind or soul, almost like a purification, and thats the part that i find so interesting.

don't see it as a yawn that's just to generic
see it as a response to facial muscles slowly contracting
and a response to waht normally happens when you sleep....
I sleep study normally envolves placing at least 52 sensors
on your skin that measure the resistance...

Hmmm i guess i was just looking for a deeper answer but mabey thats impossible.
I wonder how much research has really been done on yawning. to me it doesnt seem like very much. This may be quite a stretch but im reading this book called "on intelligence" by Jeff Hawkins. He says that in the study of intelligence there is a duality in the thought process that is poorly connected. Theres the group of people who study the biology and chemistry of the brain, and theres the group who studies the actual emergence of intelligence. I guess he is trying to unify these to schools of thought to better understand both, and then possibly create truly intelligent machines. I havent finished the book yet so, im not sure what kind of job he does tying these two together
I Think that a similar unification of the materialistic, and mystical/philisophical views on yawning would be very interesting, if possible that is.

Also when u say when your high on whatever i assume were both talking about hallucinogens. i dont know anything about crank. To me everything your feeling on say mushrooms is feelings you have felt naturally before youve started tripping. very natural, not fucked so to say. Im not sure exactly what im trying to say here, but i think its important to say that the feelings on mushrooms are natural feelings, just amplified and twisted and switched around. No alien feelings, like when im smoke weed part of that feels alien to me. I think simplifying why we yawn so much when were tripping to being fuccked up isnt answering anything. Because its natural i feel that there are natural answers to whats going on. By natural i dont just mean scientific materialism either.

Hey dont worry about it. Were both just trying to broaden our perspectives here. How else should i view a yawn. I view the word yawn as a word that symbolizes the action. and i believe that action is more significant than most people mabey. Mabey i do live my life there. If you read my first post you can see how significant it seems to be in my life. what im trying to understand is why couldnt i yawn? And why do i have to work up to a good yawn? I was pretty much textbook example social anxiety up the wing wang, and that i believe is a huge connection. I dont think i understand what u mean by living a life there.

Yes, I was going through a pretty confusing time where a lot of questions seemed so disturbing. I don't know exactly if me not being able to yawn was a direct effect of it, but it happened in the same time. But if this does any good to you, feeling depressed doesn't lasts that long, though it seems like it is.:)

i remember reading somewhere that said yawning has a social connection and that it is a signal to others telling them how we are feeling through body language. it could explain why yawning is contagious. it also could be part of why you werent yawning when you went through your social phobia, not being in synch with another group of beings perhaps.
when you lost the abiility to yawn did you ever see anyone else yawn?
it happens to me almost immediately. i just yawned as a matter of fact from thinking about it.

yea deffinately, its pretty annoying. Its funny when me and my brother were tripping we were so connected, neither of us could. We were connected in a way that only one of us could think at a time kind of, and the other got total mindblank. but it was obvious that the one with total mindblank was helping the other formulate a thought. it would go back and forth that way, one of us mindblanking, the other coming up with great ideas. coulndt seem to yawn though.
I deffinately hear you about social connection though, I can yawn now, but only by myself. Or i can yawn first, but nobody seems to pick it up. If someone else yawns my body will want to yawn but i cant do it in succession. At least its better than not being able to yawn at all. Really weird.

it doesnt matter that you only think of yourself, some things happen whether you care to think of it or not. humans are social animals and lots social animals communicate subconsciously with one another. everyone in the group begins yawning to signal it is time to sleep.
i can fake a yawn and then immediately after will actually yawn. weird. i just discovered this.

Yawning [in your sober state] is usually related to the amount of oxygen in the air wherever you are. More specifically the amount of oxygen your body is getting from the air. When you are ready to sleep, your breathing slows down... but if you are still awake your brain still feels like it's not getting enough, so yawn! Pull in some oxygen! Same goes when you wake up... your lungs are still in sleepy mode so I guess it wakes you up a little bit in either case. It is also an interesting example of body language, like what Audi0 just said. As far as getting the yawns while tripping... I have no idea

cool article. It really does feel like a sycronization. When are you more sycronized then when you are tripping with someone? But also tripping alone doesnt stop me from yawning like crazy either

yawn
This page gets really juicy when it gets to the part about a connection between schizophrenia and yawning. Apparantly schizophrenics dont yawn enough, and are encouraged to do so, because it gives them better control over their symptoms.
Also i have been looking online and alot of these drugs like paxil, which are perscribed for social anxiety, and panic attacks, have side effects of constant yawning. Or some users when they just start on it have the urge to yawn constantly and cant.

I've noticed more yawning on MAOI potentiated trips. This could be due to increase in vasoconstriction leading to lower oxygen intake making the body yawn. Yawning makes others yawn, meaning you will probably have a couple sitters watching over your tripping ass. You certainly don't want the drug users to be culled out of the gene pool if drug use is a catalyst for evolution. That is reaching a bit I know, but sometimes it just fits. Could be unrelated.
