Other parties....

Does anyone here think that the American public will ever get out of the whole republican and democrat party only thing? I am suprised that more people do not look in to the libertarian party or any other party for that matter instead of the two stated earlier. I am hoping and forseeing sometime in the next 65 years that peopel will finally realize taht there are better policies and such from "3rd party" candidates. Any thoughts?

I think in order for third parties to have any kind of chance in America, there first needs to be some election reform. If we had proportional representation, condorcet voting, or anything other than our current "winner take all" system, then we might actually see some progress. Personally, though, I've become almost as disillusioned with the third parties as I have with the Republicrats. None of them seems to represent my views. Maybe if there was some party that was like a merger of the Libertarians and Greens, I'd be more enthusiastic about it.

As someone who not only votes, but volunteers for the Libertarian party I can honestly say that the biggest road block to third parties in America is the ability of incumbent candidates to pass laws and take actions blocking ballot access to third parties.
This happens throughout the US, and both the Republicans and the Democrats regularly engage in it, since they both feel that third parties "shaft" them out of wins (think about how the Democrats felt about Nader's votes following the 2000 election).
For some reason, they seem to have this mentality that "if only the 3rd parties weren't around, those votes would automatically go to us..." so they attempt to block third parties from ever getting onto the ballot.

We will always have two but they will both use third parties to split the vote of the competitor.
