What sort of kooky new WMD's do you think we have now?
    #6036808 - 09/06/06 10:12 PM (17 years, 6 months ago)

the public is always sooo far behind on what is actually out there in the weapons and military tech world.

we learned about the bomb 50 years ago....

im somewhat afraid to think of the power that someone on this earth might currently possess.....

Shit man I dont even want to imagin the weapons we have thats the government is talkin about. Have you seen the show future weapons on discovery channel? They got some crazy shit up there sleeve...

The MOAB bomb that can destroy a 16 block radius with out the use of nuclear technology. Theres also another bomb where a single bomb deploys around 40 disc shape explosives that seek out a target. One of those bombs has the capability to destroy 25-30 armored vehicles I cant remember exactly what number they showed on the show.

Honestly im pretty impressed how far technology has taken us when it comes to military. Now its only a matter of time before we destroy ourselves.

Look back in history... Name me ONE civilization that wouldn't just take over everything if it possessed the military capacity of the USA.

It's just a matter of time, and terrorism is speeding up the clock.

2000 years from today, we will be nothing more than a chapter in a book. Enjoy your ~72.6 years!!

Oh, remote nanobots is a great idea BTW!

The most interesting WMD would be if the critical mass barrier in nuclear weapons can somehow be overcome. The result would be micro-nukes, tiny devices with enormous explosive power.

The biggest nuclear weapon in history is the Tsar Bomba, and it is also the one with the least nuclear fallout. (97% fusion!) Lets use this as an example.

The Tsar Bomba weighed 27.5 tons and measured an impressive 8 meters long and 2 meters thick. Its yield was variable between 50 megatons (lead casing, clean) and 100 megatons. (uranium casing, dirty)

If somehow the hurdle of critical mass (plutonium) could be overcome then there would be nothing to prevent a minitiaturization.

How about miniaturizing it a millionfold?

Now we have a bomb that is 8 centimeters long and two centimeters thick, weighing 27.5gr. (let's say as big as a lighter, weighing an ounce) This little pocket-sized object has a mighty roar however: it explodes with the force of 50-100 tons of TNT explosive, making it 5-10 times as powerful as the MOAB or Daisycutter. At one kilometer distance your clothes will burst into flames. At 10 kilometers distance, windows break. Even though the yield is 200 times less, it still does 1/35 of the damage the bomb on Hiroshima did, effectively demolishing a medium-sized town. Currently some large mortars can deliver their payload across 10 miles distance, so a nuclear device this size could be weaponized in mortar shells.
Imagine this in terrorist hands.

A bomb the size of half an aspirin would be as powerful as the truckbomb that demolished the Murrah building in Oklahoma City.

That would be an awful weapon of mass destruction, but if you make the bomb smaller still, it gets even worse.

Imagine the same bomb, but now 1.000 times smaller still. This bomblet will be 8mm long and 2mm thick, weighing 27.5mg, or about the size of a 1/3 inch piece of matchstick. This minute thing still has the explosive force of 50-100 kilos of TNT explosive, which is an explosion equivalent to a mid-sized arial bomb.

Why is this so terrible? Because these can be incorporated into smallarms munition like for instance the NATO round. You then have the possibility of a platoon providing its own artillery support, one well-aimed rifle shot doing away with a modern tank or small bunker.
The terrible part is that the battlefield will be crawling with soldiers using all sorts of mini-nukes, greatly increasing the carnage.
Then, imagine clearing unexploded nuclear ordnance after the battle is fought

So curiously enough with nuclear weapons it is miniaturisation that is scariest.

laws were meant to be broken,

even the laws of physics,
hell one day we might see somthing this small...
god help us all.

we could feed them to birds and release them over enemy cities, they would shit destruction!

althogh wiccian, didnt yeild increase with size? i dont think that were considering that size/power ratio right

Bomblet is a valid name for submunition :smirk:

If the grapefruit-sized neutron bomb story is true, then one or a few of those could be used to flush a subcritical piece of U-235/Pu-239 with neutrons, the enormous neutron flux might well pull the fissile material over the chain reaction treshold, producing a low-yield nuclear explosion in a really small package. The fissile material, if designed right, wouldn't even need compression, as only the neutron pulse of the fusion-only neutron bomb can set it off.

The fission-explosion can then fuel a miniature teller-ulam configuration and your miniature hydrogen bomb is complete.

Wiccan, did you ever play MDK? It had "the world's smallest nuclear bomb" as a weapon. Man that was a good game.

MDK = an old shooter, where you head was a weapon in itself. Stands for Murder Death Kill.

I only ever played the demo i think.

No, no, no. It stood for "Mission: Deliver Kindness." Didn't you read the manual?

That or "Max, Dr. Hawkins, and Kurt."
