Pipe screens?

So I was walking around in downtown toronto, when i approached a store called SHANTI BABA, which sold incense and smoking pariphanaelia.

I went inside, found this really sweet bone pipe, paid about 9 dollars for it, and the guy at the counter gave me these pipe screens.

so I was like WTF.

Can't I smoke out of a pipe without a smoke screen in it? I'm pretty sure my last pipe didn't have one.

Of course you can smoke without a screen, some cheap metal pipes have a rather large hole in the bowl so debris can be sucked through. Take the friendly gesture and say thanks. Most decent glass pipes don't need a screen

You can smoke without a pipe screen, but with those kind of pipes, they seem to get cloged with old resin and hot ash goes down into it and into your mouth. It was nice of the man to give you pipe screens, they're worth extra you know...

I like to use them to put scraped resin on... You don't even have to go through the messy trouble of making a ball, just plop the resin on your screen and hit that shit  :rasta:

I think I should start using these screens, because my pipe is full of resin and shit. I don't want to waste all that good stuff inside by simply cleaning the pipe. I was wondering if I could shake some rubbing alcohol inside, then pour that out onto a plate and let the alcohol evaporate. Will this leave a smokable resin? If not, does anyone have any other ideas?

I think my friend told me he did something like that, and it worked... But I dunno... Its so much easier to get a coat hanger and just scrape the sucker...

I only smoke bong resin though  :cool:

I use glass screens... they're really neat, easy to clean, and never wear out...  I use them in all my pipes and bongs (kinda pointless in a bong, but makes kief/hash way easier to smoke)

brass screens are OK, but I can taste them so i don't like them... I don't have any metal pipes, but I DO use a steel screen in my wood pipe.

But free screens are free screens... hell, you can even use them to replace the screens in your faucets! :laugh:

They're a must for resins.  I remember the drought of '04 around here.  I had to scrape my pipe for weeks.  Every time I smoked without a screen, the res ball just sucked right into the bowlhead and disappeared.  With a screen you can rip it like there's no tomorrow and never get lungfull of burning hot resin.

Bit of advice. Try smoking your bud with a magnifying glass on a sunny day. It sounds rediculous but you'll find your bowls last longer, will taste better, and I seem to remember reading that some THC is destroyed when the flame touches the bud. A magnifying glass's small concentration of heat and slower heating rate would prevent any THC or active canibanoids from being lost due to the intense heat of the fire covering the entire bud as opposed to a hot light covering only a small area of the bud. So if there's any truth to canibanoids being destroyed by combustion this would be a nice way to reduce/get around it if you can't afford a vaporizer...

i've done this before, if you have some really tasty bud, the full flavor really comes out with this method. i didn't notice myself getting higher this way because of less THC being burnt, but it sure as hell felt very clean to smoke without using a lighter or match.

i mostly smoke outta my homemade lightbulb vape....works great til i can afford a volcano. I have used it for about a month now, and i quit cigs about two months ago...and my lungs feel greater than ever!

I often save resin from pipes, but I would not smoke it as is.

Once I have about a gram saved up, I dissolve it in 99% isopropanol (rubbing alcohol) and then let the liquid drip through a coffee filter. I then let it sit in a warm, dry environment until the alcohol evaporates.

Sometimes I put it through more than one coffee filter.


It gets me high and tastes much much better than straight resin (ew)

(probably a bit healthier too)

First is it glass or acrylic or metal?

If it was glass I'd get a glass bowl piece, two piece set. usually 5-15 bucks.

I don't smoke outta metal pieces cause its harsh, and the aluminum tends to shred off in very tiny microscopic pieces with the smoke, inhalin that shit in ya lungs can hurt, over time.

Get a glass piece, their healthier for smokers and much more adequate to tastes if you keep the piece cleaned frequently!

Oh.. they do offer "Glass Screens" It's a little tripod like thing with a ball in the center fused together of glass, their Glass pipe/bong screens, just not metal, but glass. They work fantastic, I would look into getting one!

You don't need a screen for a bong because the water at the bottom of the down tube will catch all of the ash so it doesn't get in your lungs. If you are smoking out of a pipe with no water filter, definitely use a metal screen so you don't get the ash in your mouth.

I cut my metal screens all along the round into a long spiral strip that is around ~1/8 th of an inch wide(, ~1/3 centimeter wide,) and I take this strip and create a bend or partial hook at the end derived from the center so as to poke through the hole of the glass pipe and anchor it in position. Then I wind the rest of the spiral on top of it like an upside down ice cream twist.

I insert it into the pipe bowl with the hook down into the hole turning it a bit (like a screw) so that upside down the screen remains in place.

this is efficient for preventing the inhalation of cherry for all small pipes. (a simpler twist of screen works in a straight glass chillum)

glass screens are great, you can buy a bowl or slide with a larger hole, use the glass screen and get much bigger fuller rips. ive been a glass screen user since 02 now and i swear by them.

i thought i was the only one who got stoned enough to try and smoke a bowl with a mag glass. great shit other ppl are doing it. its deffinitally a nice day bowl to get some sun and burn one with a mag glass. no butane taste and if you coffee grind it up for a second it usually cherrys and stays lit.

They sell pipes with small magnifying glasses propped up about an inch above the bowl that swivles. I thought about getting one just to expand my collection, but I already have a Volcano, so no need to spend more.

Glass screens are awesome, I had one once, I lost it after the first session I had it, though. I'll definatly be getting another some time.

Gomp, you even use screens for bongs? Why? The water is the filter.

eViL420, yea I've had greens in my bong water as well. If you learn to pack bowls just right though, it doesn't happen and you don't need a screen.

In any case, when smoking bud (resin and shake aside), if you can pack well, you really don't need a screen (unless you feel inclined to rip the ash and clear it into your throat).

redgreen, why not just bend the screen into a bowl shape? I've never encounted a bowl that was too narrow for all screens that it needed a cut up screen...

with the cut spiral, you can use spoon pipes, often the bowl shape won't stick in a small spoon, but a cut piece of the twisted screen will hook into the tiny hole in the bowl

BTW I went to SHANTI BABA a couple of weeks ago on a printing expedition (next door) and it was fricken amazing...

no dust anywhere and lots of items of various kinds as well as many peculiar but useful looking bags and sculptural decorating commodities too.

wacky and clean.

Then smoke accordingly and get a screen. Its just a screen, (if you need one, use one)Even a broken piece of glass can work as a screen. You dont need to suck on the pipe too hard, ya know.......


If you are smoking powdery stuff then get a screen of some sort. Hell, most people have Faucets that have multiple screens. Burn the shit off of it and then use one of those.

I would have thought this was a non issue. It only has to do with the mechanics of your bong pipe or water-pipe.....

And there are many forms of screens. Some even make a 'screen', using tobacco, then 'filling' hashish powder on top. With a tight fit, so the hashish burn, and then you suck really hard, and the tobacco 'screen' disappears in to the water, with a "swoop", like shooting the smoke in your lungs..

I guess it is up to the individual, as all else.. ;P
