shaggy manes found on my lawn
    #6035065 - 09/06/06 01:23 PM (17 years, 7 months ago)

Outside of my bedroom window I found these little doods growing in the exact same spot as one grew last year. I didn't have the chance to sample it last year as my mom kicked it over and destroyed it, afraid I was going to poison myself. I just want some confirmation that this is a shaggy mane, as I am anxious because this will be the first mushroom I consume out of the wild. Thanks!

Also, would the little pin be worth eating?

Yep. Those make a pretty tasty soup. If you are going to eat them make sure you do not drink any alcohol at all for about a week, or you will be poisoned.

Those are indeed shaggy manes. I hear that the stem is the tastiest part. You can sautee it and eat it like asparagus. I don't think that shaggies react with alcohol.

Well, I just sauteed one and it was pretty tasty. I have stuff to do, but in 40 minutes when I'm done I'll cook and eat the rest.

i didnt think they reacted with alcohol either, but this website said otherwise. http://www.wildmanstevebrill.com/Mushrooms.Folder/Shaggy%20Mane.html
dont know how accurate the info is though

it also said they are not good to sautee because of the high water content

Good to know. Many Coprinus species do cause this reaction, so maybe some shaggies do too. As far as sauteeing goes, and this goes for most mushrooms, putting it in a pan over medium heat with nothing else but a little salt will draw the water out. Once it evaporates, you can add your butter or oil or whatever and get pretty good results. Interesting about all of our different sources for the stem vs. the cap a-la tastiness.

I have also heard of ill reactions from alcohol and shags, mostly vomiting/diarrhea.I don't think it'd be life threatening just very unpleasant.

I should have made this a bit more clear so here is the edit:Not just some wine like if you drink a large quanity. And I have ate them with some (limited) drink within several hours and had no problems myself I figure its a quanity thing and deffinetly not for a week maybe a day.Or maybe some are just more sensitive to it,or maybe they just reacted to them being unusuall mushrooms compared to store bought.

I don't think I've ever had a mushroom meal without a bottle of wine to go with it, and that includes shaggy manes. I've never experienced any negative reaction.

I suppose it could vary by individual physiology and subpopulations of mushrooms. The true alcohol inky's can cause a reaction with even a smal amount of alcohol. And it is pretty nasty evidently.

Shaggy manes are a really pretty mushroom, but I'm not a big fan of eating them. Good for taking pics.

Nice find yob.

I think that those websites might just be going with coprinus+alcohol = ill type idea. I dont think I've seen anything elsewhere that says that shaggys cause this type reaction.

That's cool - you made a choice edible mushroom find from within your own house. I wish they grew in my lawn.

Apparently people can have a nasty coprine reaction by just having a whiff of perfume/aftershave/cologne  :ooo:

This is true. Coprine, the chemical responsible for the nasty effects, has the same mechanism of action as disulfram (marketed as antabuse). This drug used to be given to alcoholics to deter them from drinking. But even using aftershave could be enough to illicit a reaction in these people. And the symptoms are nasty.

However despite rumors to the contrary, I don't think that coprine was ever used instead of antabuse, or to formulate the drug. I think disulfram was discovered before coprine was isolated. But if anyone has conflicting/confirmatory info that would be great.

Clitocybe clavipes causes the same kind of reaction but doesn't contain coprine.

Quote:

C clavipes, of family Tricholomataceae, is also associated with disulfiramlike reactions. However, coprine has not been identified in this species. C clavipes tends to grow in conifer trees or mixed woods and fruits in late autumn or winter. Its cap is gray-brown, mostly flat, and 1-3 inches in width. Gill extends down a stem that is club shaped and thickened near the base. C clavipes is commonly called "fat-footed clitocybe" or "clubfoot funnelcap."
