12h on 12h off is whats most commonly done
i use more like 8 on 16 off, only because it seems to be just effective and saves some electricity.

What about 6 on, 6 off, 6 on, 6 off?
I heard some use that. Any advatage? (I'm testing it out anyway - comparing 12 on - 12 off vs. 6 on - 6 off - 6 on - 6 off).

A couple of minutes of light is just fine. Light doesn't trigger anything really, other than let the fruiting mycelium know which way to send fruits. (In nature the sun is UP so mushrooms grow that way) 12 is excessive and not needed. You're just wasting energy if you leave the light on that long.
Give it 5 minutes a day.

Yeah most of the things I read said that just a few minutes a day is plenty. All it's good for is telling the mycelium which way is up. It doesn't do anything else for the shrooms since they don't use photosynthesis like most plants.

Wow - light matters that little - hmmmm...
But I heard it does impact pinning, not just as a trigger, but optimal lighting will add/enhance pinning.
I don't really know.

Most strains do respond to light as a trigger but what most people are getting confused about is light in itself is not much of a trigger compared to your other triggers BUT when used in conjunction with all other triggers being optimum you will see more prolific pinning!

fromthemoon, you bring up an excellent point.
Many practicing growers here claim that the secret to an EVEN pinning set (mushrooms growing evenly all over the casing) involves even light placement all over your casing.
It doesn't so much hold in regard how much light is used or how long light is introduced; but how evenly light is diffused over a casing.
A good pinset will of course depend on how much practice you've had with casings. Do a forum search on some of the bulk tub grows. Especially eatualive and iamthewalrus. They talk a lot about even pinsets.
-Good luck

Cool. I have a ton of different lights around the house for my aquarium hoddy (where light is the most importiant factor - must mimic direct sunlight.
Power Compact, NO, or T5 fluorescents come in either full white, blue spectrum or 50/50 both.
I was thinking of installing a long PC 50/50, giving the mushies both full and blue.
If you have it, might as well use it.
But, I do have one cake with a cheap PC bulb (not the same quality as aquarium lights - only 13 watts compared to 96 watts) and the knotting is forming all over.

I would try a metal halid light, but the heat is an issue and I don't have an extra which would then cost about $300 for a new one - not worth it.

Cool white fluorescents are the least expensive of the effective lights. Blue or blue spectrum isn't necessary.
Lights should be applied for at least several hours per day. With some strains/species, they won't grow well at all with less than very bright light. I don't subscribe to the five minutes is plenty routine, even for cubes. Consistent, good results require more light than that.
I've often said 'total darkness' is overrated, but the importance of light in conjunction with the other pinning triggers cannot be underestimated. RR

Lighting has very little to do with even pinsets read my pinning strategy to learn more about how to achieve even pinsets CONSISTANTLY.
