FL actives that don't bruise blue?
    #6031047 - 09/05/06 12:01 PM (17 years, 5 months ago)

OK, I've been interested in and reading about mushrooms on the internet for a long time, but none of my friends were into 'em and I didn't want to hunt for them or take them alone. A good friend of mine moved back to the area and he is an experienced shroomer and so with all the rain we've been having in the Tampa Bay area, we decided to go find some. My friend learned to hunt from friends, not from reading endless websites about them like me.

At any rate, we headed out to some local pastures and didn't have much trouble finding about 20-25 caps in a short amount of time that I could 100% positively identify as psilicybe cubensis (my friend just calls them "purple ringers").

My question is about another 5 caps that my friend found that I think he called "copper tops" that I could not identify. They looked a little like cubes, but the beige color was more even on the caps, there was no nipple on the cap, and most importantly, the stems did not bruise blue or green. Of the 5 of them, 2 of them were mature enough to drop a black spore print, the others had black or grey gills depending on maturity (the smaller they were, the more grey). Because I couldn't ID them, I refused to eat them, which kind of offended my friend 'cause he felt that I've only read about this stuff online while he's been hunting and taking them for years, but I stuck to my guns and declined and in the end he ate the ones I couldn't ID, and we split the cubes.

Unfortunately, I don't have a digital camera, so I don't have pics- but I'm not so much asking for a specific ID as I want to know if there are any actives that one would find in a central FL cow pasture that would *not* bruise blue. Most of the stuff I've read says that if it doesn't bruise blue, I should just toss it.

On a side note, my first trip was interesting. It was pretty mild- I just saw lots of motion/distortion/imagery in wood grain, or textured wall covering and stuff- but it wasn't earth shattering or some kind of religious experience or anything. Overall, I think it was prolly the perfect amount for a first trip, although I look forward to trying more intense trips in the future.

The ones that don't bruise blue are likely an inactive species of Panaeolus. They look much like the active Copelandia cyanescens, or blue meanie, however they are not active at all. Basically, on a FL cow pasture you need to search for P. cubensis like you found, or the Copelandia cyanescens. Both bruise blue, copes vividly so. There will be no doubt when you have one. Everything else, throw away.

Good luck
