Possibly 7 types. Can anyone ID at least 1 or 2?
    #6027458 - 09/04/06 08:45 AM (17 years, 5 months ago)

I found all of these at my parents' house yesterday in New York State. They were all in the same proximity. All were growing in dirt and dead pine needles except for the last one which I found in a small compost pile. Please reply even if you can't ID all of them. And I promise I'll get a field guide after this so I can start offering what my thinking is. Thanks!

1.
Gills: Faint yellow or white
Stem: Brownish-orange at base to light orange at top, 1-1.5 inches
Cap: Brownish (on smallest) to brown in center, orange on outside
Spore Print: White

2.
No Gills, No Stem
Possible Puffball of some type
Color: White to brown
Exterior: Bulbous, with little bumps all over, 1" diameter
Interior: White on inside of white ones, rotten/ugly looking on brown

3.
Gills: Looked slightly purplish at first
Stem: Hollow, light brown and small 1mm thick
Cap: Convex to flat with bump in middle, brown on inside to lighter
Spore Print: White

4.
Look very similar to #3 but gills looked more tan and cap coloration was more of a dull brown. Spore Print appeared to be white on these too.

5.
Gills: Faint yellow
Stem: Dark orange throughout, up to 2"
Cap: Flat, orange in center to yellow on outsides
Spore Print: White

6.
Gills: White to tan in spots
Stem: Lighter at base to darker orange at top
Cap: Orangish-brown at center to light tan/cream on outsides
Spore Print: White

7.
Gills: Brown to dark brown
Stem: White with brown, several mm thick, curved on some from growing out of the side of compost pile, small ring on most
Cap: Mostly brown with a little white, up to 3", looks similar to caps of portabellas almost (excluding shape)
Spore Print: Dark brown

1; looks like a common puffball, is the exterior textured? lil spines? if so I'd like to say its edible. #5 was that growing in a ring? Were was it growing? Theres a type of ringless honey mushroom, without a viel.

Good descriptions and nice photos. Unfortunately, I cannot accurately ID any of them. However, you're right on #2, that's a puffball, possibly lycoperdon perlatum. They are edible when young and still white inside, although I imagine they don't have much flavour. #5 looks like some sort of collybia, which is supported by the spore print. The stems should be rather tough.

I don't know about number 5 (you might be right though) but you def. hit the nail on the head with the puffball. That's exactly what it is. I pulled up lycoperdon perlatum on wikipedia and the picture they had was even better than mine. It's definitely the same thing. Thanks!

1 looks close to Rhodocollybia butyracea.
2 has already been done.
3 looks like Laccarias.
4 it would be good to see the underside.
5 and 6 both suggest Collybias.
7 look like Agaricus, although those dark caps are different than any of the species that grow where I live. The spore color looks too dark for Cortinarius. Try cutting one in half vertically and see if the gills are attached to the stem. If they're free, watch for color changes in the flesh inside the mushroom. Also note the odor.

Happy mushrooming!

Agreed - 7 is an agaricus, 5 and 6 could be collybias or perhaps a weird Marasmius,
