Daaaaamn! Steve Irwin is dead
#6026444 - 09/03/06 11:04 PM (17 years, 4 months ago) |
|

Quote:
THE Crocodile Hunter, Steve Irwin, is dead.
He was killed in a freak accident in Cairns, police sources said today.
It is understood he was killed by a stingray barb that went through his chest.
He was swimming off the Low Isles at Port Douglas filming an underwater documentary when the tragedy occured.
Ambulance officers confirmed they attended a reef fatality this morning at Batt Reef off Port Douglas.
Irwin's body is being flown to Cairns.
It is believed his American-born wife Terri is trekking on Cradle Mountain in Tasmania and is yet to be told of her husband's death.
Irwin - known worldwide as the Crocodile Hunter - is famous for his enthusiasm for wildlife and his catchcry "Crikey!".
The father of two's Crocodile Hunter program was first broadcast in 1992 and has been shown around the world on cable network Discovery.
He has also starred in movies and has developed the Australia Zoo wildlife park, north of Brisbane, which was started by his parents Bob and Lyn Irwin.
Tributes have already started pouring in for the larger-than-life character.
Foreign Minister Alexander Downer, who used a photograph of his family at Australia Zoo for his official Christmas card last year, hailed Mr Irwin for his work in promoting Australia.
Irwin was heavily involved in last year's "G'Day LA" campaign.
"The minister knew him, was fond of him and was very, very appreciative of all the work he'd done to promote Australia overseas," a spokesman said.
A Tourism Queensland spokeswoman said the death was shocking and paid tribute to Irwin's "enormous contribution" to his adopted state.
Louise Yates said it was impossible to quantify how much Mr Irwin had meant to the Queensland tourism industry.
"I don't think we could even estimate how much he brought us through his personality and his profile and his enthusiasm about Queensland," she said.
"It would be difficult to estimate how much he was worth. And it would be difficult to underestimate."
She said Irwin had been a larger-than-life ambassador.
"It's not just what he brought but what he took with him when he travelled, his passion."
Australia Zoo, on southeast Queensland's Sunshine Coast, employs more than 500 people and attracts thousands of visitors every day.
But Ms Yates said it would be "unfair and unjust" to put a dollar value on Irwin's worth to the state, because of how much he had given.

a stingray is a flat member of the shark family with a long poisonous spine on its tail, when threatened by a madcap aussie, they whip the spine straight for the heart, injecting a lethal toxin.

in steves name we should do whatever we can to completely wipe out these little bastards! then, check crocodile hunter footage for animals that have attempted to kill Steve Irwin, then make them summarily extinct too, steve would have wanted it that way.

This is actually funny considering that I was thinking of the word krikey yesterday and today I saw a stingray almost hop completely out of the water and start thrashing on a rock wildly, as if he were trying to scare the people.

Steve Irwin was killed by:
1) Dick Cheney 2) the Greys 3) the DEA
because he was getting too close to the truth about:
1) a giant undersea Reptillian nest 2) CIA exploding dolphins 3) the Prison Industrial Complex
I know this because:
1) I saw it on the internet 2) I have a giant maillia file folder full of clippings 3) Karl Rove told me
The end.

I think this could only mean one thing...somewhere out there is a 75 ft. wide 12,000lb ocean beast, with a sting that can pierce diamond and a stare that could make Stallen cry. It's the only thing that would make any sense at all.

As much of a tragedy that it is that Steve Irwin was killed by a stingray, deep down we all had a feeling that his cause of death might be a dangerous animal, while filming his show. Either way, it is still unfortunate.

i can't help but ask myself, "why is is nessisary to hold a baby-shaped peice of meat in one hand while feeding baby-shaped peices of meat to a croc in the other."
to say the child was in no danger seems a little unbeleivable now. considering the "Expert" "professional" got killed by an animal that for all purposes is a recluse.
I've always wanted to have my own nature show. Steve diddnt really have a "nature show" he had more of an "exhibitioning lunatic wrestles nature" show, sorta original and successful, but so was jackass, and look at all the injuries.
i feel bad for his child, how he will never know his father, and evryone else in the world will. :P

Apparently this was all caught on tape and it was just a freak accident, not involving any serious risk taking. The stingray's sting is not normally fatal but they said it actually pierced his heart.

Steve certainly took risks with animals, but this was not one of them. The sting ray was buried in the sand when he swam over it. It's just a freak accident and very sad.
I began watching his shows years ago before he was widely known and began appearing on Jay Leno and such.
Hopefully there are plenty of critters up there to occupy him!

Me either . I remember an episode where he jumps out of a boat onto the back of what he thinks is a 5 foot croc . The thing is throwing him all over as he's screaming , " I think this one might be a little bigger then I thought, lol . Definitelt thought he might go more along those lines .
A stingray . That's like Keith Richards dieing of a Tylenol O.D.

I can control the feeding cycle of any animal in captivity, just dont feed the fucker or over feed the thing, but to assume that any animal is predictable is a foolish thing, it's that lack of respect for these wild animals that does infact get people killed by them.

You wanna know what really scares me? As a kid I lived on an East Australian (Still do) waterfront and we used to go out into the mudflats and swim and fish and catch stingray with homemade spears. Hell once I even unknowingly PICKED UP A BLUE RINGED OCTOPUS. I'm surprised I never got stung or bitten by anything out there.
You know what's really sad? How some people in this thread have to turn it into an argument about who he was and what he did. Truth be that none of us really new who he was. Only his family will.
Death is a time of respect, no matter who the person was and what they did. When people used to be hanged for murder and violent crime the last words the priest would say to the accused would be "May God have mercy on your soul."
Not that any of that relates to Stever Irwin, but still I feel bad for his family.
I bet his soon Bob and daughter Bindi-Sue will grow up to be the stingray hunters!

When most celebrities die, I rarely give a shit but hearing this about Steve Irwin was a major downer. I don't know why, I'm not a wildlife buff and I don't have the Animal Planet channel, nor have I ever followed the career of Steve Irwin. But I did always notice he had a way with animals, and not just maintaining his safety around the dangerous ones. He had a genuine passion for the well being of all of God's critters, and truly cared for them. Under average circumstances I doubt this freak accident could have ever happened. Only a couple dozen or so people in the world have died from stingrays since they started counting in 1945, while Irwin has been face to face thousands of times with creatures that are far far more dangerous than a short-tail stringray. And really, had something slightly different happened, he could have easily survived. But freakishly that stingray's barb landed right where his heart was and pierced it open. RIP Steve. My gut tells me he has no animosity towards the said stingray at all. He loved the creatures of the planet, and had a sterling respect for them that few people in this day of age have. To me he's not just some celebrity. He was famous because he was a beloved and talented human. He will be missed.

The death of Steve Irwin is indeed sad. As it is sad when any seemingly good person dies. But really people get a hold of yourselves.
To all the fanatics: I am sure none of you knew him personally so there should be no need to shed a tear or get into a heated debate over ONE mans journey through life. If he was never famous then would he still deserve your grieving? When will the day of immortalizing the famous come to an end? I guess I just expected more from such a well educated community.

On behalf of the community I'd like to say, we're sorry and we'll try harder in the future.

now now. I do not wish anyone to change for me or even sarcastically imply such. Thank you for speaking for the entire community. Sounds like a dictatorship to me though.

Yes, because dictators are notorious for apologizing.

yes he would. He was a man who did a lot to further the cause of conservation and was a great ambasador for Australia. He was famous for the admirable job he did, not because he was the slutty daughter of a hotel magnate.

OK so I worded a few things wrong. Of course he deserves being grieved. I should have said 'would' he still be grieved. And I am certain the answer is no. Of course not because you wouldn't even know who he is. Also I should have stated "I guess I just expected more from such a 'seemingly' well educated community." My point is still the same though. Too many people make too big a deal out of celebrities.
post script - It was a little too obvious that you Mr. Feces were not being serious about apologizing. Furthermore why does everyone insist on dissecting everything people say and avoid the topic?
So I guess it is I who should apologize for not meticulously combing my statement before posting. <----not sarcasm.

What's with the whole anti-fame bit? Did not people here mourn the deaths of Terrence McKenna, Syd Barrett, and other beloved celebrities? How is Steve Irwin any different?
