Found growing in Western Michigan from the base of hardwood trees. Usually grow in numbers, but not in clumps. Cap measures about 3.5” across and is a tawny brown color. Stipe measures about 3.5” above the ground. Stipe is solid and will “snap” when bent. Gills do not appear to be attach to the pileus. The pileus on mature specimens have a “nipple” in the center. No evidence of a veil. This is a rather sturdy, solid mushroom. Spores are white. There is no bruising apparent on the mushroom. I've heard people say that the "Stumper Mushrooms" are out now, and was wondering if thats what I have here. Trying to look them up is a nightmare since there are so many variations. According to the guide, some do grow here in Western Michigan that do not have a veil.

Yes, I'm sorry I didn't mention. It is.

I would bet on an amantia, not for sure. Did you dig up the base? Not exactly sure on which amanita but that would be my best guess.

Just from the general appearance, my first thought is Xerula furfuracea.

Very carefully dig up the entire base of one. Xerulas have rooting bases to their stems, almost like a taproot.

Happy mushrooming!

Thanks ToxicMan. I was going to mention how long the "Root" was, But I didn't think that was the correct term for it. I think Xerula furfuracea is what it is judging by what you've told me and images/descriptions that I've Googled.
