Is it possible to think yourself into "insanity"?
    #6025124 - 09/03/06 04:38 PM (14 years, 8 months ago)

Granted, the definition of "insanity" is in the eye of the beholder. But seriously, does anyone think it's possible to think too much about one's reason/purpose for existence? I ponder this question among many other metaphysical-type questions every day for many many hours.

I am beginning to think that if I keep doing this, I might be legally insane in 5 years or so from so much contemplation...

It is possible, considering that it happened to some persons before.
It is impossible if you put your mind to not going insane.
It's all about the mindset and what you really want, if you want NOT to go insane, you won't

Sometimes i feel like i'm going insane due to excess thinking/pondering, yes, so i try stopping it for a while.

I once noticed a quote, maybe in this forum: "Never leave your mind go pondering, it may not come back."

My opinion is that there's no harm in leaving our minds go pondering, we should just keep an eye on them though. Try to give your mind a break for some time, experience the living-without-thinking-anything world, save some energy for some other things and then start again! Cheers!

I can't stop thinking. I've tried meditation, drugs, doctor's orders (the worst option), over-thinking, and lots of other things. Even when doing other activities like reading or working, I usually can't quiet my mind. I'm sure it's due to a type of "weakness", if you will, but I just can't make it strong enough to quiet my thoughts.

Try something that you are not trying so hard to do.

Ever heard of the body scan? It's a simple relaxation technique for lost causes like me. Try it three times a day for a half hour at a time. It works.

Your problem is most likely fear of death.

Dude, there is no such thing as quieting your thoughts. Even in meditation, you have brain activity, therefore you have thoughts. The only thing that happens is that you don't overanalize them or try to fight them. It's sort of like tripping, when you fight it or try to find a "reason", a very soberly one, it just goes insane, when you let it be and just accept it, everything makes sense, even the biggest non sense.
Meditation is the same thing, being aware of your thoughts, enthusiasm and even fears without interfering in their course.
This happens to you because you make it happen, because you think it's something wrong in not being able to stop your thoughts, and then you become nervous about it.

yea, I know, I thought it'd be funny

but yea, I'll read that over while I'm taking a warm relaxing soak. Maybe reading it relaxed is the best way for right now.

Again, thanks.

I have found personally that they are the same. Often our somewhat unconscious fear of death is the cause of our unwillingness to take a chance and really live. Instead we try to think our way out of our fears. (That's just not possible, but try to tell that to your ego structure) I'm not saying this is your case but that it often is. I tend to look deep into things. I (like you) thought and thought and couldn't get away from thinking. But as in the advice you already have gotten, we can't stop thinking for long and the worry of it is what makes it seem unbearable. :mushroom2:

Once after an acid trip I was essentially in a meditative state for three days -- I completely stopped thinking in words, I became totally lost in a higher plane of consciousness, and kind of forgot who I am (whatever that actually means).  My 'thoughts', if you can call them that, were all in vibrations of energy emanating from my heart cave, and I did not speak unless spoken to.

I have a thousand thoughts per second flowing through my mind at all times; the experience described above is something that I cannot find words to describe, nor comparisons to draw.

Edit: I realize this doesn't have much to do with the original topic, though it does respond to some other people's posts.  About thinking yourself into insanity: I once had to confront the notion that I was totally losing my grip on reality, that my thoughts were straying deeply into delusion.  When I finally confronted this nagging notion face-to-face, I was rewarded with a profound transcendental experience.

You can only be as insane as the culture around you makes you.  If you place no value in the cultural movement of the day, you are free to view the illusion from a calm, quiet place deep within.

and I will have the will, strengthened

at the crucial moments I’ll recover
my spirit as was before: ascetic.”

I thought you were talking about something else.

I got the body scan from a book called. Full Catastrophy Living It was from Johns Hopkins Medical Center. The body scan was used on patients that the hospital had given up on as far as dealing with sever pain, often associated with terminal illness. It's really a simple Buddhist meditation that results in deeply relaxed body states. It resulted in a 70% success in patients, giving some level to complete remission of pain sometimes with a reversal of the terminal illness. Remember this is on patients that the medical profession had given up on. Remarkable to say the least until you come to believe that we are in control of our experience. :mushroom2:
