FC in the dark?
    #6021456 - 09/02/06 05:19 AM (18 years, 4 months ago)

Quick question: as mushrooms aren't using photosynthesis for energy production, would it be possible to keep my FC in the dark for convenience-sake? I don't have a ton of room, and a long, flat rubbermaid tub with a moistened perlite layer would give plenty of humidity.

I imagine light prompts direction of growth, but is there anything else I need to be concerned about?

They need some light to "know" that they are above ground and should start fruiting.

Not much just a bit also no longer then 12 hours.

You don't need an extreme amount of like as most plants do. What was told to me is "enough light to read" is good enough for the mushies. So if possible you could string Christmas lights up for it. Those don't take up much room at all.

I've had mushrooms growing in complete darkness - and they were fine. all they had was 5mins of light a day when i was venting/spraying

Excellent, that's exactly what I wanted to hear. I'll try out the Christmas lights idea if I find that they're not getting enough light with the daily upkeep of misting and venting. This is why shroomery is so great; it never would have occurred to me to string Christmas lights under my bed as a light source. Great suggestion, Capless!

Thanks for your input guys. I'll post pictures of my FC and results when I get some!

Depending on the amount of room under your bed, and other possible problems related with putting light sources to close with furniture on clothing. keep in mind that this could be a possible fire hazzard. i know my house almost went up in the past due to a short in the line that wasn't noticed. good thing for me i always have smoke detectors, and a fire extinguisher... call me paranoid, but i like living in a non-burnedtotheground house.

just try and keep everything as clean as possible without things that will come into contact with the lights. Just some food for thought.

So I went ahead and did a quick test tub to see how this is going to work out.  Here's a coupla pics with two test cakes:

So far I'm pretty impressed; I imagine that the internal humidity level will be very high with the amount of perlite surface area available for evaporation.  In any case, it'll be much better than the trashcan method shown in the Simple Minds PFTek.  I'll also be able to slide it under the bed and put at least a little bit of my paranoia to sleep!

One last pic that I'm excited about, look at those pins!

Thanks for the kind words, guys! I've got a coupla more cakes ready to be birthed, but what I'm really waiting for is my syringe of Cambodian to arrive... I've had such success with PF Tek that I think I'm going to go for some WBS and tennstud goodness!

For anyone wondering about fruiting in the dark, GO FOR IT!
