Mag. Stirrer/Stir Rod Question

Ok I received my magnetic stirrer today from ebay. When I turn it on I can feel the base of it producing magnetic waves that are suppose to make the water spin. How ever it doesn't. But I hear ever one talk about that you need a stir rod for the stirrer in order to make a vortex in the water/LC. I tried some magnets & bolts but it didn't work. My question is do I definitely need a stir rod for the magnetic stirrer? if so What cheap home made stir rods would you suggest. If I dont use a stir rod do you think the magnetic stirrer is fine for agitation by its self.

galvanized nail.

it will not work at all without a stir rod.

the "magnetic waves" will do nothing for you.
there are no waves.

A magnetic stirrer is a two part deal. You have the base, which contains a rotating magnet. You also need a magnetic stir rod, which in my experience is a small plastic coated magnet. I've seen both straight and cross shaped ones. What the base does is cause the stir rod to spin in accordance with its internal rotating magnet.

As mitch said, the base alone won't do anything. You'll have to get ahold of a stir rod insert. Since magnetism alone won't do anything to the water, you need the insert, which is what actually agitates the liquid.
