White powder?
    #601942 - 04/08/02 06:28 AM (22 years, 14 days ago)

Hi a friend has several cakes that gave very small and few shrooms, after first flush cakes seemed not to produce anything else, been 2 weeks now, also notice what looks like a white powder on caps of some pins, a lot of pins never develop they shrivel up, Humidity is high, and temperature is bee twin 60 and 70 F, could it be to cold? Or to much humidity?
Please help.

sounds like lack of nutrition to me-lack of water-are the cakes dry you say? i would dunk them maybe-but that always lead to the green ick when i did cakes-

i put them back in the jars(clean of corse) fill with water, and put lid on so the cake will stay submerged under the water-leave for 12 hours, then take out, wipe off extra moisture on cake-and waaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa laaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa cake rehydrated

They could be rotting, could be a contam.
Are the pins changing color to something brownish ?

Peace,

No they just shrivel up, what concerns me is th white spots on the caps looks like a crake mosaic.
some have been completly engolf by it.
Could it be to much humidity ?, I am lowering it down.
I would try to post a pic of it

Do they do this:

And the white covers the cap:

This is new to my friend but it is notorious with the puerto ricans spores she was working with. She tried to narrow it down. Since these spores were obtained right when the puerto ricans came onto the spore scene, They may still have genetic deficiencies. Using the same variables, another try taken from the master strain jar produced these:

It should be pointed out that the above were tested useing birdseed/ BRF spawned to Wheatstraw soaked in zoodoo and cased with peatmoss and lime 10:1 ratio. The humidity was 100% until pinning then dropped to 80%. The temperature was held at 65 degrees until pinning occurred, then brought up to 70 degrees. Airflow was achieved by using a hepa filter turned on twice a day for 5 minutes- dropping humidity to 70% for 5 minutes then brought back to 80% using an ultrasonic humidifier to bring it back up. Light was Natural sunlight cycle from skylight.
Other tests supported the idea that it may have been the lime in the peat. Using all of the above except lime, trays fruited normal. But this was not 100% 3 out of 4 did fruit normal, but still the abnormality of degeneration of the fruit and white splotting on the cap occured in one tray. This is as far as she has gotten so far. She'll update me when she gets more results.:)bluhoney

Thats exactly what it's doing, so do you think is just genetic?

I've also had the same problem on my recent attempt at PR's so maybe it's a defect with genetics however I'm going to try again on various substrates to see if nutrition is the culprit.

It may be genetics, or the puerto ricans might just be VERY picky. Something in normal conditions is either lacking or to much of. OR some spores might carry the genetic defect which only appears every 4th or so generation. To early to tell, but as more people experiment hopefully we can come up with better answers.:)bluhoney
