quick Q about casing moisture
    #6018315 - 09/01/06 12:11 PM (18 years, 4 months ago)

how do you know if the moisture content of the casing material is too high? im not talking about humidity. i dont have any pools of water or anything. im just wondering if it is possible to have a casing layer with too much moisture and what the effects would be. My casings dont seem to want to pin but are colonizing like a mofo and its been about a week and a half. this would be like the 4th time in a row the casings dont wanna pin and i fan like crazy and all my other factors are straight. the casing layer is visually moist and feels really moist. i dont get it. thanks.

The casing should 'glisten' in the light, thats the correct moisture content. Cant really say much more than stop misting the casing after it starts glistning

havnt misted it in a while, like a week, the humidity stays at about 92% i know higher humidity is optimal 4 pinning but i cant get it any higher becasue of a less then airtight lid. i figure it doesnt matter so much casue like i siad the casing looks and feels wet.

If you haven't misted in a week and the humidity is 92%, then the casing layer is definitely too dry. What is the material the casing is made from?

peat/verm calcium carbonate powder on hpoo spawned with rye. when i get home from work ill post a pic. there isnt a dry spot on the casing and it hasnt pulled away from the sides at all. i have misted the sides of the FC but not the casings directly. last time i misted the casing the fluffy mycelium got un-fluffy so i've been trying not to do that.

heres some pics. the close ups are of the big one. it turns out i have a few pins on the 3 small ones but still none on the big one which is the one im worried about cause its been in there a week longer then the small ones which have only been in there about 4 days. WTF.

They look fine. You can always lay a sheet of wax paper over the top of the casing to hold in a bit of humidity right at the surface. Lift it up each time you fan, and replace every second day. You should see pins soon. Keep air exchange up and give plenty of light.
