Which works out because it sounds like he's just gonna chop it up anyway.

That's a pachanoi.
You're lucky, most people get cuzcoensis when they order peruvianus. Be happy with what you got.

Ive heard the horror stories from Ebay Cactus Purchases.
And I know that I am very lucky. I love this big guy allready!
So I'll probably chop off its head.. and eat it's body!!!
hahaha..
Actually Im thinking I might keep it over a year and give it alkaloid enriching conditions(water starving is said to work).
Im thinking water it once a month for a year. Lots of heat & Light(indoor grow room). Give it a fertilizer feed every few months.
When I do chop it Id like to keep the top alive and get it growing.
Couple Questions if anyone would like to answer...
What kind of lights would a Pedro like?
Is it simple as cutting the top off and rooting it in some new soil?

You know, I've gotten feedback from several people that contests the concept of stressing the cactus to increase alkaloids.
I used to think the same thing, but some reasonably educated people told me they think otherwise.

if you plan on keeping some to grow, i would chop of the stretched thin 11 inches and cut that up into two 5 1/2 inch pieces.
Let them sit in a window sill of someplace else dry with a bit of light and let them callus over..
Then stick your two newly callused cacti into some soil (some people use rooting hormone, i just let nature take its course)....roots will eventually come.
Then next year they should throw of some new pups. Keep them in full sunlight and they wont stretch.

"Actually Im thinking I might keep it over a year and give it alkaloid enriching conditions(water starving is said to work)."
Water starving will not help you. It will only make it thin out, thus increasing the alkaloid to mass ratio, which really only matters if you're eating raw cactus like corn on a cob. Alkaloid production depends on nutrients, not beating it up and refusing to water it. Even if the unproven theory of harsher conditions "strengthening" it were true, it would need resources to complete the alkaloid production.
Apparently, in areas in peru, the end of summer is seen as the ideal harvesting time (I read peyote differs, though), though some suspect that even time of day can cause variation in potency.
I recommend just trying to get as much happy, healthy growth as possible. If you want to stress it, you can always let your harvested cutting sit around for a while before you eat it, and it won't slow the growing section.

Hey Konnrade,
Thanks for saying so.. I've found it best to read many perspecitves before going ahead with a cultivation plan of any sort.
Dunno what I should do....
Im going to be sticking it in soil of some sort tommoro. It's still sitting with exposed roots.
I'll pay close attention to it and try to respond to it best I can.

Be careful what soil you use, I'd make sure its well draining & not going to sit retaining water. Gravel, pebbles, rough sand and perlite are good additives for cactus soil.

Certainly.
I had a bag of store bought cactus soil.. I can't find it... I'm suspicious of its contents anyhow.
So... was going to make my own.
I have all sorts of vermiculite, Perlite, potting soil, gravel, sand, fish tank gravel... etc. Is Hummus just that.. Chick pea Hummus??
What sort of mix do you all use???
Especially northeners who grow indoors.
Tks. T.

chick peas , sorry about that, humus is all the rich organic stuff in the soil, that is left behind from rotting vegetation, or a compost.

has anyone here ever heard of agricultural zeolite? think of a crystaline gravelly soil additive that holds nitrogen and gradually breaks up clay and slowly releases minerals, acts as PH buffer. good stuff. been using it ever since my wife bought it for me by accident thinking it was just gravel for drainage. supports the good micros.
works pretty good for that too. along with perlite and concrete rubble. (zeolite also locks up some of the alkalai)
basically my cacti soil is 30% commercial cactus soil, 20% organic compost, 10% perlite, 20% sand, 10% concrete rubble, 10% zeolite. then i put a layer of zeolite on top. stones, rubble and broken clay pots on the bottom.
san pedro seems to florish in this. also tried it on aloe, works well. see no reason to beleive it wont work well on evrything. just use judgement, the more desert the plant, the lower the % of soil and compost.
use BIG pots, I like to use 30 gal, clay. unglazed is best for evaporation of access water, but i like the glazed, much stronger, and airy soil can handle the moisture.
i pay about $10 for a set of 3 post, 1 30 gal, 1 20 and 1 10. you can get a deal like that this time of year if you shop around.
heres a pic of the pots i used. see that baby? just a little zeolite and some of my very own sperm, some compost, and 9 months later....miracle stuff i tell you, gods own wonder mineral.

how can something that looks like this NOT be good for growing the good stuff

also makes great biomatrix, filtration, odor remover, cat litter, the list goes on.
