What do you feel is the most serious social issue in this country

What do you think that it is, if there were one thing that we as a nation could focus on, what would it be?

I think perhaps it would be maintaining the balance between liberty and security. There seems to be a dangerous trend of thought lately that our long-held traditions of due process and checks and balances are somehow "letting the terrorists win," whatever that means. The issue gets obscured by some into an issue of surveillance vs. no surveillance, when it's really an issue of accountability vs. unaccountability. And of course, little attention is paid in mainstream political discourse to the role that world poverty, cultural hegemony, and addiction to oil plays in our national security. The focus is all on treating the problem, not preventing it.

the fact that our culture and values are being entirely manipulated by corperations and PR firms in order to keep us consuming and complacent.
And the fact that we live in a totalitarian democracy, meaning that the citizens have almost no participation in the decision making progress. We are presented only two choices (Dem, and Rep) which both represent only special interests, and then we are told that third parties are not worth voting for.
and the gov'ts attempt to oppress free speech...
i guess there are a lot of "most serious" social issues. but if I had to pick just one, I guess it would be the first one. And at the same time, they all tie in together.

Energy.
Energy.
Energy.
Everything else pales in comparison.
And we are doing virtually nothing about it. The Bush admin and govt in general seems to specialize in not addressing urgent needs which can crush our civilization.
Pathetic leadership.
Fiddle on..

yeah, i happen to agree with this, as far as a financial issue, and threats to the sustanability of the sort of life that we lead, energy is a very large issue that needs to be adressed.
Most of what happens will happen in the private sector, as there is $$$ in it, Even i am looking into large scale production of energy and fuels.

Health Care wins hands down.
Its a here and now problem which is effected by all other problems we face.
It is more than a social issue, it is a crisis.

Energy is a good one also. It will some day be the death of us or our liberator... that may happen in my later years or in the years of my grand children.
I was just talking about the energy debate at work and I told the two guys that same thing, their children/grand children will most likely die in wars due to our failure to react now to the oil shortage and they both shut up quick.. Small victories are sometimes the best

I definitely agree with Energy, and I guess it also ties into what I was saying about consumerism. Energy wouldn't be nearly as much of a problem if we didn't waste so god damn much of it!
We are conditioned to be so comfortable, and to have machines do all of our work for us.
It takes thousands times more kilo-joules to drive one person around in a two ton vehicle than it does to power a bicycle.
Fuck cars! Fuck gasoline! Fuck air conditioning! Fuck constant electronic entertainment!
It's hard to not be a concerned citizen and a hypocrite at the same time...

I think that constitutes flaming.
Seriously, though, to think that we shouldn't have air conditioning is ridiculous. Perhaps we could develop better technology to implement in air conditioning (in fact, this is being done, I've heard of air conditioners that utilize ice and run when the temperatures are cooler to save energy), but, like I said, it is ridiculous to propose that we shouldn't be using air conditionres, or driving around in vehicles such as cars. There is a legitmate reason why we drive around in cars, and most prefer cars to bicycles/motorcycles.
 Peace.

I couldn't agree with your empirical observation more. May I add to it that there is a secret society in our community, who still pledge its allegiance to the Flags of the Confederate States and seeks to overthrow our democracy of liberalism with conservatism. Its strategy is to manipulate its legal wit to divide our nation over the issue of national security vs. civil liberties.
The writing is on the wall that it's mission has succeeded. The only way to counteract its assault is to educate the American public to learn our Bill of Rights and due process of law.
Expect to go to hell in a handbasket if educated human beings continue to trust lawyers for knowledge of our legal rights.
