J.R.R Tolkiens The Hobbit. I read it when I was younger, decided it was worth another read. It is pretty good and I enjoy Tolkiens style of writing, overall it is a quick read.

Just finished this, didn't think I'd sit down and read 400+ pages in one sitting. Would recommend!

I am almost done with Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas. I had always heard of hunter so I decided to give this book a try and I really like it!

After finishing Mikhail Bulgakov's The Master and Margarita I switched gears to nonfiction. About to finish the acerbic Evgeny Morozov's delightful anti-cyber-utopian volume The Net Delusion.

about half way through Stephen kings "desperation" actually my first king book.
after that I am reading a book lent to me by a girl I know, its called "smack", and as you might have guessed, its about smack. I like drug books but the reviews on this one don't really intrigue me, im just gonna read it because I told her I would.
it's by Melvin burgess, if anyone has read this, let me know what you thought of it.

A great book, if a little disturbing in parts. Last time I read it was when I was about 15 and really associated with the main character...not sure what that says about myself at that stage!
did you hear that banks is dying? sucks!
It is what made me pick up the book again, is sad.

I saw the film and I'm not sure if I liked it or not. Very very fucking weird. I think some of the humor got lost in the excessive weirdness for me. I wonder if I'd like the book better. I do read cracked, and "David Wong" certainly isn't the worst writer over there, but i dunno....

Desperation is one of my favorite King novels-- I've read it a couple times. Really good stuff. A little depressing IMO, but cleverly written and kind of epic. It also ties in with the Dark Tower series (which I have not yet read.) Other books that are awesome and tie in closely with The Dark Tower include the two he wrote with Peter Straub: The Talisman and Black House, all of which I kind of want to re-read.
Right now I'm reading Dead to the World by Charlaine Harris. Yes, that is the Sookie Stackhouse / True Blood series. Book 4, actually. Not too bad so far. The books are good for a quick read. If you like the HBO show, you'll probably like the books. Some stuff is the same, but some of it diverges quite a bit.
I'm also making my way through a non-fiction book. Tricks of the Mind by Derren Brown. Derren Brown is awesome and his book is as entertaining as it is informative. Mind you-- if you've already studied subjects like memory, mnemonics, ideomotor effect, NLP, and hypnosis it may not be a ton of new info-- but still pretty interesting.

Correction-- apparently I was in great need of more coffee earlier.
When I read "Desperation" my brain somehow interpreted that as "Insomnia," which is the book I was actually referring to as one of my favorites.
Desperation is good, though far from the best, IMHO. (For the record, that one does kind of tie in with Dark Tower, though not quite as much as Insomnia.)
There was actually another book released called The Regulators which was released under Stephen King's pseudonym Richard Bachman. The Regulators is almost a weird mirror of Desperation. It's kind of the same story, set in different circumstances, and with a slightly different writing style. I actually liked The Regulators way more than Desperation. If you like Desperation (or maybe even if you don't) The Regulators might be worth checking out...

Me too. I mean, I'm reading that right now. The only other of his work I've read is Neuromancer. I hear Pattern Recognition is great though, of his newer stuff.

The Greatest Show On Earth by Richard Dawkins.
Richard Dawkins book (the second I've read, 1st being The God Delusion, naturally) The Greatest show on earth is a very educational and factual read on Darwins theory of evolution, natural selection, artificial selection and more. Good and mainly very interesting.
Have to agree. A well put together book.
Anyone know any good books on human sociobiology or gene-culture co-evolution? I'm thinking of starting with either Richard Dawkins The Selfish Gene or E.O. Wilson' landmine Sociobiology: The New Synthesis.
I laid awake last night thinking about how much genes effect behavior and to what extent cultural factors become responsible for producing behavior.
