The important thing is not to stop questioning. Curiosity has its own reason for existing. One cannot help but be in awe when he contemplates the mysteries of eternity, of life, of the marvelous structure of reality. It is enough if one tries merely to comprehend a little of this mystery every day. Never lose a holy curiosity. ~ Albert Einstein

I just read Emma by Jane Austen for my college English course.  I can appreciate Austen's subtleties but the plot of this book left so much to be desired.  I don't think Austen was at her sharpest when she wrote this book and I wouldn't recommend it to anyone except the kind of person who spends a considerable chunk of her or his life watching soap operas.

Next up is Milton's Paradise Lost; Here's a real challenge! :hehehe:

--------------------
“Strengthened by contemplation and study,
I will not fear my passions like a coward.
My body I will give to pleasures,
to diversions that I’ve dreamed of,
to the most daring erotic desires,
to the lustful impulses of my blood, without
any fear at all, for whenever I will—
and I will have the will, strengthened
as I’ll be with contemplation and study—
at the crucial moments I’ll recover
my spirit as was before: ascetic.”

Specimen Days. Can't recall the author, but it's pretty alright so far.

We are always acting on what has just finished happening. It happened at least 1/30th of a second ago. We think we're in the present, but we aren't. The present we know is only a movie of the past.

The Road - Cormac McCarthy

It's about a man and his young son trekking across post-apocalyptic America. I' started it on Monday, and I've got ten pages left.

Welcome evermore to gods and men is the self-helping man.  For him all doors are flung wide: him all tongues greet, all honors crown, all eyes follow with desire.  Our love goes out to him and embraces him, because he did not need it.

I have about 20 pages left. What do you think of it? Seems pretty fucking depressing to me; even more so knowing that something like is a very real possibility.

So we finish the eighteenth and he's gonna stiff me. And I say, "Hey, Lama, hey, how about a little something, you know, for the effort, you know." And he says, "Oh, uh, there won't be any money, but when you die, on your deathbed, you will receive total consciousness." So I got that goin' for me, which is nice.

I found it amazing, but yes it is definitely bleak. I am certain earth's humans will have a similar phase in their existence sooner or later.

The Big Sleep by Raymond Chandler.

Acid doesn't give you truths; it builds machines that push the envelope of perception. Whatever revelations came to me then have dissolved like skywriting. All I really know is that those few years saddled me with a faith in the redemptive potential of the imagination which, however flat, stale and unprofitable the world seems to me now, I cannot for the life of me shake.
