The Golden Compass by Philip Pullman
-------------------- Acid doesn't give you truths; it builds machines that push the envelope of perception. Whatever revelations came to me then have dissolved like skywriting. All I really know is that those few years saddled me with a faith in the redemptive potential of the imagination which, however flat, stale and unprofitable the world seems to me now, I cannot for the life of me shake. -Erik Davis

That's a good trilogy by Pullman, I read it a few years back. We seem to have similar tastes in books as I think I remember you were reading some Neil Gaiman a while back. I highly recommend you read some Tim Powers. He will blow your mind!

Nice, I can't wait for the movie. I just re-read the book.
I'm reading The Two Towers by Tolkien, having just finished Fellowship. I will be moving on to Return of the King next. I've been on a bit of Tolkien binge lately, having read The Silmarillion and both Lost Book of Tales after re-reading the LOTR trilogy and The Hobbit in March of this year.

Just finished The Terror by Dan Simmons. Next is either The Crook Factory by Simmons or Wolves of the Calla by SK. I'm also reading a veritable stack of tech books atm.

You reread the LOTR trilogly in March, and now you're rereading it again, and you've already made it to The Two Towers? That is fucking dedication man. I respect that.

Man, after I first read LOTR I re-read it twice in the span of like three months, then read Silmarillion and all of Tolkien's works I could get my hands on.
I still love those books. Every time I immerse myself deeper and deeper in the story, become a little more appreciative of the writing and narrative structure - some of the most wonderful, mystical emotions I've ever experienced well up in me when I read about the landscapes and histories of Middle-earth.
Right now I'm reading Autobiography of a Yogi by Paramahansa Yogananda and Shambhala: The Sacred Path of the Warrior by Chogyam Trungpa, and listening to Eckhart Tolle's The Power of Now on my iPod.

My body I will give to pleasures, to diversions that I’ve dreamed of, to the most daring erotic desires, to the lustful impulses of my blood, without any fear at all, for whenever I will— and I will have the will, strengthened as I’ll be with contemplation and study— at the crucial moments I’ll recover my spirit as was before: ascetic.”

I've got no job and no kids. I've got all the time in the world to sit on my ass and read...still got respect for me? LOL. But yeah, I'm between college and career this summer so this is the last lounge time I'll get for a while.
Hey bug, its nice to see another fanaddict of Tolkien. Every time I re-read I pick up on something new and indeed get a clearer picture of the lands, relationships, and connections between things in LOTR and the histories of M-E as told in the Lost Tales, Silmarillion, etc.
I'm pretty sure I'll be reading LOTR about once a year, if not, then once every two years.

The important thing is not to stop questioning. Curiosity has its own reason for existing. One cannot help but be in awe when he contemplates the mysteries of eternity, of life, of the marvelous structure of reality. I don't see why Vineland isn't recognized as one of Pychon's beter efforts
The dialogue and descriptions flow freely and the setting should make it more accesible to modern readers

This is all I have been reading all summer, and I'm only 200pgs in. Everything you've heard is true. I will finish this beast by the end of the year.

Everything I've heard? So it's boring as shit, totally nonsensical, bourgeois fluff, and a linguistic portal to higher dimensions?
Is it worth it?
