Meditation by Eknath Easwaran. So simple, so basic, yet totally rewarding.
-------------------- “Strengthened by contemplation and study, I will not fear my passions like a coward. My body I will give to pleasures, to diversions that I’ve dreamed of, to the most daring erotic desires, to the lustful impulses of my blood, without any fear at all, for whenever I will— and I will have the will, strengthened as I’ll be with contemplation and study— at the crucial moments I’ll recover my spirit as was before: ascetic.”

pinchbeck? down to earth? really?
that guy rubs me entirely the wrong way. to me he comes across as an opportunist, and a male chovinist, but that's just from my (limited) reading of him

Man, after I first read LOTR I re-read it twice in the span of like three months, then read Silmarillion and all of Tolkien's works I could get my hands on.
I still love those books. Every time I immerse myself deeper and deeper in the story, become a little more appreciative of the writing and narrative structure - some of the most wonderful, mystical emotions I've ever experienced well up in me when I read about the landscapes and histories of Middle-earth.
Right now I'm reading Autobiography of a Yogi by Paramahansa Yogananda and Shambhala: The Sacred Path of the Warrior by Chogyam Trungpa, and listening to Eckhart Tolle's The Power of Now on my iPod.

Man, do we have similar literary tastes. Jurassic Park and The Lost World are both great, easy reads. I actually enjoyed the latter more but it's been a long time since I've read them. I've read all of Crichton's stuff and it doesn't get any better than those two.

I just read Emma by Jane Austen for my college English course. I can appreciate Austen's subtleties but the plot of this book left so much to be desired. I don't think Austen was at her sharpest when she wrote this book and I wouldn't recommend it to anyone except the kind of person who spends a considerable chunk of her or his life watching soap operas.
Next up is Milton's Paradise Lost; Here's a real challenge!

This book is insane! It is definitely on par with some great anti-machine novels such as Catcher in the Rye. I'm surprised no one has assassinated a political leader with this in their coat pocket.
Millions of hippies have sent out loving vibes to their political leaders with this book stashed in their sarongs, though.

I am re-reading The Return of the King right now. These books get better every single time I read them. I take refuge in the majestic landscape of Middle-earth pretty regularly.
I am also reading Old Path, White Clouds by Thich Nhat Hanh, a beautiful narrative of the life and times of The Awakened One, from Siddhartha's point of view and from the point of view of a young buffalo herder who becomes his disciple. I highly recommend!

I'm reading The Human, The Orchid, & The Octopus: Exploring & Conserving the Natural World by Jacques Yves Cousteau. The book is gripping; Cousteau glides effortlessly back and forth like a manta ray between giving harrowing and bone-chilling accounts of his diving and sailing adventures and raising tough ethical questions backed by utterly depressing information about corporate, governmental, and public practices which are devastating our planet's fragile ecosystems. This is one of the most powerful books I have read in recent memory, as it is forcing me to bring more consciousness into all the ways in which I am out of harmony with the complex and ancient balance of life on this planet.

He's written a lot of good stuff. For a Westerner looking for an introduction to Eastern philosophy, he's a great place to start. The only thing I find disconcerting about him is that occasionally he seems to have something of a misogynistic bent - maybe just a product of the time he lived.

In his writing. In The Book (On the Taboo Against Knowing Who You Are), his most famous work, I remember feeling that he held unfair views of women. Misogyny is too strong a word. I don't know anything about his personal life.

Today I started reading What Makes You NOT a Buddhist, by a Tibetan Lama named Dzongsar Jamyang Khyentse. This book is a powerful, no-nonsense transmission of Dharma, perhaps the best book I've ever read about the Buddha's teachings. The writing is very humorous and the message sticks.

I'm currently reading Luminous Mind by Kalu Rinpoche, a famous Tibetan Lama....and taking my sweet time. It's an excellent book. The one problem I encounter while reading it is that a Western female translator who worked with Kalu Rinpoche for many years accused him of having tricked her into an abusive sexual relationship by telling her they were doing advanced Tantric practice. Since the accusation was made after his death he has no way of defending himself, but it hangs over my head as I read it.... And I am conflicted about whether a book's contents should be divorced in the reader's mind from its author.
I'm also re-listening to The Power of Now on my iPod.
