The Girl on the Train. It only has about 6 or 7 characters but next time I'm going to take notes. The NY Times said Has more fun with unreliable narration since...

The Big Short by Michael Lewis (Liars Poker, Moneyball, etc). It's good and Lewis did  it first, but I think Matt Taibbi explained it better, and more interesrtly in his series of articles on the mortgage crisis, too big to fail, etc.

A Perfect Spy

John le Carre

I reread this book every 5-10 years. le Carre goes way beyond being the best spy novelist and is one of the greatest writers in the world.

The main character's life is shaped by his con man father (and absent mother) which were inspired by le Carre's personal biography.

Lou Reed A Life by Anthony DeCurtis. I'm ranking this right up there with Keith Richards' Life, and definitely a cut above any bios of Dylan, Springsteen or Neil Young.

Reading Sartre's The Flies. I don't usually read fiction that takes place a couple thousand years ago. It almost sounds like Plato but I know the morality (or lack thereof depending on your point of view) will be a whole lot different.

I just started Buddha's Book of Sleep. The first half is a general overview of mindfulness and the second is specific meditative exercises for bedtime.

It did have me concentrating on remaining in the moment at the bar last night.

Amazing book.

I'm currently reading Nausea by Jean-Paul Sartre.

I always wondered how hard it would be to get through Nausea and Being and Nothingness. I don't have a philosophy background. I only took 101 and it just covered the Greeks. What was useful about the class was an exposure to the Socratic Method, and the instructor basically interrogated us to see if we could back up what we said.

I read Huis Clos and L'Etranger in French/No exit and The Stranger in English. I read Existentialism is a Form of Humanism, but these seemed easy to me and not particularly dense.

What got me reinterested in this 35 years later was listening to Velvet Undergrounds, "I'll Be Your Mirror" and the Cure's "Killing an Arab", which are based on those two works of existential fiction.

I'm reading Dostoevsky's The Karamazov Brothers (this edition has the title phrased that way). He covers most of the important issues in the human condition. Parts of it are captivating and other parts get laboriously slow. I'm a little over 300 pages in and have nearly 600 to go. I'm thinking it would have made a great 500 page book.

The Tresspasser by Tana French. With the death of John Lecarre and my having already read his best books way too many times, she's turned into my favorite author. Also because James Ellroy and Dennis Lehane seem to be slumping.

The Girl Who Takes An Eye For An Eye. This is in a series written after the orginal Dragon Tattoo author died. Normally I would look askance at this type of thing but it's a good read so far.
