Government controlling food
    #6012507 - 08/30/06 05:21 PM (17 years, 8 months ago)

I caught the ass end of a conversation on the radio about a government banning coca cola products I believe. As I said, I only caught part of it, but he said it was because of the massive amounts of chemicals, and it was not going to help keep a healthy population.

Does anyone find anything wrong with this? In the US, we have the FDA wich controls our foods and drugs...some say the people should have the freedom to put whatever they want in their bodies.....But that doesnt seem to be working.

I am about personal freedom, and dont necesarily think these things should be banned...but how else could you stop your people from consuming large amounts of unhealthy foods?

I imagine advertising is probably a big part of it, and not to mention soft-drinks are the standard in all resturants, and convinient stores.

The ruling is much like our current drug laws, the government stepping in to protect you from yourself. Except they probably wont imprison you for keeping a can of pepsi in your car.

Part of me wants to believe people should control what they do to their own bodies, and another part of me strongly thinks fast food, and soda has gone too far, and needs to be stopped. People are just too lazy, or dont understand the ill consequences.

In such times as ours however, when there is too much order, too much m management, too much programming and control, it becomes the duty of superior men and women and women to fling their favorite monkey wrenches into the machinery. To relieve the repression of the human spirit, they must sow doubt and disruption"

It's most likely India that you heard about. Some states have banned sale in schools, government buildings and around hospitals. And one has banned sale and production altogether.

I think the answer is simple. We need to become responsible for our own selves and stop buying from companies that poison us. We need to unplug the TV and open our minds.

Don't settle for comfort and complacency, don't let consumerist culture raise your children.

If we all stood up for our own rights of self determination we wouldn't need the gov't to protect us from our own lack of will power.

From what I remember, a lab in India claims to have found pesticide levels in the soft drinks in India that were several hundred percent higher than what is allowed by India law. The India government responded by banning soft drinks. There is a lot of controversy about the lab that ran the tests, lack of third party validation, etc...

The purpose of the FDA is not to restrict what people can or cannot put in to their bodies, nor does the FDA control our foods and drugs. Their mission statement:

Quote:

The FDA is responsible for protecting the public health by assuring the safety, efficacy, and security of human and veterinary drugs, biological products, medical devices, our nation’s food supply, cosmetics, and products that emit radiation. The FDA is also responsible for advancing the public health by helping to speed innovations that make medicines and foods more effective, safer, and more affordable; and helping the public get the accurate, science-based information they need to use medicines and foods to improve their health.

The FDA is responsible for making sure that our foods and drugs are safe. This is a big difference from "control". The DEA is the group that likes to control what we put in to our bodies. The DEA mission statement:

Quote:

The mission of the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) is to enforce the controlled substances laws and regulations of the United States and bring to the criminal and civil justice system of the United States, or any other competent jurisdiction, those organizations and principal members of organizations, involved in the growing, manufacture, or distribution of controlled substances appearing in or destined for illicit traffic in the United States; and to recommend and support non-enforcement programs aimed at reducing the availability of illicit controlled substances on the domestic and international markets.

Big, big difference.

i would so definitely ban it in schools though, having pop machines in schools is like coercing kids into McDonalds by having freakish clowsn handing them toys......

wonder why children love mcdonald's, and attest other fast food joints? brainwashing, there you go. simple but it takes some contemplation for those transfixed upon the electric box. (errr the passive electric box)

then again high schoolers probably deserve freedom to drink pop as they are reaching adult age. this becomes tricky, whats the difference between adolescent and child?

but hell the schools give you ritalin and freak if you have weed.
