shrunken cake/case
    #600928 - 04/06/02 10:31 PM (22 years, 6 months ago)

maybe i'm missing a step or something
but after casing my cakes... yada yada...
the shrooms have grown...

the cake has shrunken down... leaving little gaps that light can get through to the sides of the cake... is there a way i can prevent that? or do i just fill it up as it shrinks?

Put in more casing material to fill the gaps. Also, you might want to mist your casing, if it's getting dry. The reason it pulls away from the sides is that the water in the casing gets used up, and it shrinks.

The question is, how can you mist a casing without spraying the developing guys, or developing pins

With my experience, any water on the pins, ruins them, and turns them blue?

The casings are misted each day and the casing is never allowed to dry out. Directly after a flush is picked watering is increased because the maturing mushrooms pull a lot of moisture from the casing soil. It's very difficult to give explicit directions on a watering regime. You will have to develop a "feeling" for it. (mushmush.nl)

It seems that they recomend mistings all the time as well. how the hell is this acheived without ruining pins/maturing
my cases as well shrink a lot

Yes, i realize what question you were replying to..

Put in more casing material to fill the gaps. Also, you might want to mist your casing, if it's getting dry. The reason it pulls away from the sides is that the water in the casing gets used up, and it shrinks.

but since you know how to do this, i was asking how.

You cant mist casings that are pinning/maturing becuase it will ruin the fruits, so how do you mist/water the case without doing this. my RH is up around 95% with casings.

i don't know about you guys but i spray my cakes, pins and all and they're still growing very nicely... nothing is "ruined"
what are you putting in your water?

misting pins can and will cause them to abort, maybe not all of them.. .but it will

yeah, and it seems to bruise them too.  I hope someone has a way to avoid these problems! :frown:  I cant seem to find anything.

maybe my casing mixture is wrong.  its 1 part peat and one part verm. with some limestone added for good measure

>misting pins can and will cause them to abort
bs, it won?t cause them abort if you don?t apply a direct hard water beam on them. misting them lightly won?t make them abort.

Anno, do you have the answer for everything? >:)

that very well could be the problem. the musting was taking place about 4 inches from the top of the cases. So a daily misting into the air would be suitable and not harm the guys?
also, the water has about 10% of 3% h2o2 added to it (not sure if thats necessary.. would sterilizing water in the microwave or pressure cooker be more suitable, and replace the need for h2o2, or is straight water ok)

I have had SEVERAL ruined flushes due to misting (using a regular spray bottle)
it seems to bruise all the guys, and they tend to abort after that.

THANKS Again anno

I use regular water(we have very clean water here though), I mist the casings with pins without problems. Once the mushrooms get over the pin stage, I only mist the casing between the mushrooms, not the mushrooms directly.

Well, perhaps i'll try one of the casings in this manner. cause the peat is looking VERY dry, and RH is around 95%.
I'll give 'er anywhere from 10-15 sprays.. the trays are about 6" wide, and 12" long. that should do it (once a day?) in the pinning stage.

Do you find that when you mist in between the maturing guys that it causes any bruising to them?

Maybe you're right.. i'm too heavily misting. (too hard/too close)

Im using rye grain, and 50/50+ casings.

plus injecting water would be quite slow to do every day.

good idea though.
i actually tried injecting water.. but i only have 5cc syringes
