Using fresh mushrooms to start a cake?
    #600740 - 04/06/02 05:46 PM (21 years, 7 months ago)

Can this be done? If I have, say 15 grams of fresh shrooms, could I just cut them up and place them in the substrate?

I think you'd have the best success at that if the tissue you use comes from the very bottom of the stem, but it still might not work.

Take one of your bigger shrooms...
cut it up, with a food procesor, or by hand (food processor recomended)
mix with sterile water...
inoculate with this slurry of goodness.

note: ive heard your shouldn't use the cap if your doing this.

hope that helps.

Add some hydrogen peroxide too, after shredding, if youre worried about contams. Peroxide can be used with mycelium, which is what shrooms are, but kills spores.

Good luck

Usually cloning - which is what you are doing - works best with a bit of h202 - dilute it a bit with water if your worried.
cut the mushrooms in half and take a piece of tissue from the inside of the area where the cap meets the stem - dip this in h202 and then grind it through a clean coffee grinder - this will work wonders!

you wouldnt want to use a mortar and pestle at all, that wouldnt be sterile.... id say leave the food processor on longer if the pieces arent small enough, a coffee grinder has been used neither i nor afoaf has done this so i cant give you ant more help than that... i just know a mortar and pestle would give contams a good chance of invading, also it wouldnt be good to smash the fresh shroom, if you some way had a Dry shroom that was dried in a totally sterile environment and then had a totally sterile pestle and mortar and a glove box then that MIGHT work but its still kinda unlikely

A dried shroom wouldn't work for innoculation.
Blending will create *some* pieces small enough to be sucked into a syringe
