Vermiculite in Spore Syringe
    #600585 - 04/06/02 01:51 PM (21 years, 5 months ago)

I just made my first syringe from a print, (it looks awesome it's purple and cloudy) when I put the mushroom cap in the jar to make the print, it had some vermiculite flakes clinging to it. Eventually some flakes ended up in the spore mixture, when I sucked up the spore water into the syringe, I tried to avoid sucking any of the vermiculite into it, but nevertheless some tiny pieces got in the syringe. Will these flakes raise the chances of contamination?

First let me say that I am not absolutely sure of my answer.....
ok.....
I would assume that if the verm was contaminated then any spores that were touching them would also be contaminated. So I dont really think this matters. Also if the verm had a chance of getting contaminated so did the spores. So it really depends on how sterile you were. I really dont think this is a problem. Although the verm might get stuck in your needle if the pieces are too big. Also, they got in there, so they probably are small enough to not matter. And really when you think about it, everytime you innoculate there is a chance of the top verm casing in the jar going in the needle. If that would happen, a little push on the syringe would pop it out. Id say you are fine.
hope that helps.
