Rye not colonized....Spawn anyway?
    #599857 - 04/05/02 05:14 PM (22 years, 24 days ago)

It's been 22 days since innoculation.....
I lost one bag to the green monster....the other is only 5-10% colonized.
I'm afraid the longer it sits there...the more chance I have to lose this one as well.
Could I just go ahead and mix the somewhat colonized rye with the 4 lbs of compost...?

I wouldnt, it would have to colinize in the compost too and it will grw very slowly, you alos are very open to contamination since the kernals are not colinized. I fyou want to mix it then jsut mix the colinized part with a little bit of compost and wait untill that colinizes ( if it doesn contam) then mix that with more compost. It seems to me from the Q you are asking that you are inexperienced and probably dont ahve a pressure cooker. you should really look into getting one. If you are really in this hobby to grow enough mushies for you and your friends get one and work at it. Just my 2 cents.

Thanks for the reply....but.....
I do have a pressure cooker.....I have no idea where you would get that idea from the Q I asked.
I have been on these boards and most likely into this hobby far longer than you...I also know your name used to be blue boy so I'm not confused.

The reason I asked is it doesn't look like the mycelium is growing anymore and I don't want this (my last rye bag ) to contam.....

I do own a pressure cooker but it's an older model and I decided it wouldn't be a wise choice to try to steralixe whole grains in it .....soooooooo ........ I ordered the rye bags already sterelized from a very reputable dealer....

Any other opinions......?

I also was having a slow incubation period I think because my substrate was too dry. Anyway I mixed the colasized section of my substrate in with a little compost (sterilized in the micro wave for 5 min). After I mixed it with my hands, I spritsed 3% peroxide in the container/compost a bit.

I also did another seperate small container with a little compost. I moved the cosaniazed section of substrate into the compost put the lid on the container and shooke it up. Then misted with peroxide.
I did this yesterday (basically the same method as was posted above) so I can't tell you how it came out yet.

I did not mean to offend you with my post regarding your experience and Im sorry if I did bu tit was jsut a thought. I have a pressure cooker and its not new at all but it works. Just give the grain a try and put soem jars it there. Its alot easier and cheaper than buying those bags of grain online. Just give a try and see what you get. Can't hurt right?
