Print to Syringe Formula - Mulitspore Theory?
    #599485 - 04/05/02 10:01 AM (21 years, 7 months ago)

Perhaps I should post this in the Vendors forum; my question relates to the number of syringes one usually makes from the usual print. Suppose you have a fairly average sized print, maybe one inch diameter with a medium dark deposit of spores, a small container of sterilized water and any number of empty sterile syringes. At first glance, one might think 'the more spores in the syringe, the better' but my logic tells me this may not be true... If I understand correctly, the ideal situation would actually be to innoculate a substrate with only 2 basidiospores, one of a + mating type and one of a - mating type, the spores should be close enought to one another that plasmogamy can occour, producing a single 'germinate' of dikaryotic mycelium which would then have exclusive access to colonize the entire substrate and use its nutrients to produce basidiocarp fruits. Happy shrooms. If, however, we were to use too many spores, plasmogomy could occour many times over at different locations within the substrate, producing multiple strains (or colonies?) which compete with one another to colonize the substrate and fruit; this may result in a situation where only one of the 'strains' may find appropriate conditions to fruit (ie, at the top of the casing where it comes in contact with light and fresh air, causing it to pin), while the other 'strains' may be burried deep in the center of the substrate, using nutrients but never giving back the gift. Am I on the mark with this? So based on that theory, you would want to innoculate a substrate with a very small number of spores... This is why the professionals use agar to isolate a strong strain and then spawn it onto the substrate. Of course for those who grow at home and dont have access to an electron microscope and tensile nano-manipulators and other $100K lab equipment (read: almost everyone), this is all useless theory. So... um... guess that got away from me a little bit there... how many syringes do you reasonably make from an average sized print?

Ciao,
BeautifulDay

Also the most cheap and effective way to isolate - make ten jars from that solution and only fruit those with rhizomorphic mycelia
