Rye Berries just...stopped O_o

Okay...so this is my first question in a while...but it's an important one. Before trying rye berries, I attempted BRF/Verm cakes with litterally NO success...the cakes compressed themselves during sterilization (litterally shrinking down into the jar by up to an inch in some cases.) I trashed them in the back yard in vain hopes that some of the myc that WAS able to form manages to take root in the soils there (they're super fertile)....but I'm not going to hold my breath on that one.

anyway, when I did the rye berries, I soaked for 24hrs, then pc'ed at 15psi for an hour, using three coffee filters as a lid instead of tyvek (since none was available to me)...I knocked the berries with 2ccs of myc from a LC I had made at the same time as the brf/verm cakes, and was amazed with the speed of colonization at first, being that half the jar was colonized in a little less than two days....but since then, they've all but quit.
There are no signs of contam, but I did notice that some of the berries at the top looked quite dry, and thus would prevent colonization. What are some possible solutions to this? can I simply dampen the coffee filters and remedy this?

Coffee filters are simple dust covers meant to protect a better filter underneath them.
Coffee filters alone will not cut the mustard.
Coffee filters would also let to much moisture OUT.
50% colonization in 2 days is fast for myc.
Given that fact, I doubt it is myc.

well...it looks EXACTLY like just about EVERY myc picture I've seen on here...furthermore, I cant think of anything that would spawn that quickly...so...I'm gonna continue thinking it's myc untill it proves me wrong.

I do hear you loud and clear on the filters though. What would be a better filter that I might find around my house? I have some microspore tape that I got from the ER last time I went...would this work of I covered the lid with it?

Well, you may not have it around your house, but polyfil makes a fine filter, for about 2$ at wally world. Then you can also get an infinite amount of tyvek for free from Uncle Sam at the post office. Just look for the soft priority mail mailers. They'll have the word tyvek written all over them.

Either makes a great filter. Then just cover with a coffee filter and you'll be good to go.

thanks, wiggles. Luckilly for me there's a USPS right up the street.

Quick question...would I be able to flash sterilize and re-use the tyvek once I've cut it to fit?

I normally use fresh tyvek each time. Its easy enough to procure, you just need a decent pair of scissors to cut it into squares.

Just walk in, grab a handful of the mailers, and ask the nice lady at the counter for some of the mailing labels. You're pretty much hidden in plain view, so don't be nervous. You're just mailing things  Grab a big old handful, they won't care, lol.
