I can't miss this window!
    #598956 - 04/04/02 07:02 PM (22 years, 10 months ago)

I am on an important mission here guys. In a few weeks, I've got some friends coming from out of town and they want to trip for the first time. I have been waiting to initiate these guys forever and I can't miss this window. I am sick of getting my hopes because Mike Jones is supposed to be getting some mushrooms just to be let down, so I decided to grow these bitches myself.

MY SETUP
All right, my first time growing. Here's where I am at? I have 12 fully colonized cakes. I pretty much followed the MMGG to the T, using the vermiculite, water, and rice flour recipe (unfortunately, I didn't discover "the shroomery" until just recently. Otherwise I would have used the casing method). I left the cakes in their jars about a week after they were 100% colonized. I put the cakes in my humidity chamber about 4 days ago.

I've got an ultrasonic humidifier feeding into 2 Rubbermaid containers, filtered through 2 2-liter bottles. There is a small hole on the bottom of each container for ventilation. The humidifier is on a "1hour on/1 hour off" cycle. Although I do not have a temp or humidity gauge, I have my old pot grow light suspended over the setup (high pressure sodium) to provide a little more heat (estimate around 70-80 degrees) and I can see moisture dripping on the sides of the container walls. I'm still waiting for those pinheads. There is a very small amount of white fluff forming on the cakes but not much.

These are all of the relevant specs I can think of. I have done a lot of research, but have had a hard time answering some questions. Here is what I am wondering:

1. Are their any apparent problems with this setup?
2. About how long until fruiting should begin with this setup (and after how long should I start to worry).
3. Should I crumble the cakes up and switch to the casing method? or is it too late?

Thanks for any advice you can give...

1. No
2. 3 more days. 14 more days.
3. No, just go with cakes your first time.

well......... when the guy i know tried an ultra-sonic it didnt seem to work as well as the reliability of perlite. he built this really expensive ultra-sonic fully automated terr. and he has better results with his perlite. he still uses it for a pinning chamber then puts them cased into his perlite, but you should be alright.

Is your top clear? It should be or have a window. The sides
shouldn't be. The best light for growing pot is high pressure
sodium because it is the closest thing to natural sunlight.
But with mushrooms, you don't want direct sunlight. So it
could be too much light. I have a 400w hps and you need
sun glasses around it.
Just a thought.

You may find your shrooms aren't as worried about your schedule as you are. It depends partly on what you mean by a few weeks. Wouldn't hurt to have some backup "entertainment" planned.

Maybe some hookers?

i agree there, they grow when they wanna grow-sometimes my casings start pinning fast, and sometimes my cakes start pinning fast-then sometimes you will have that one fuking strain that just wont do shit for you,but get healthier, and healthier-
what strain are you growing?
that can mean alot-
i have waited 3 weeks for pins from cakes-but only 1 time-
i would ditch that high pressure sodium-you are probably going to bake your cakes-and if not bake them, dry the fuckers out really bad, then you will have to dunk, and that leads to more contam probelms(or thats where i always get contams doing cakes)-if you insit on using the huge grow light,i would suggest using a haylyde bulb instead-it will put off a nice cool blue spectrum, instead of a nasty orange haze-
i would think about getting some back-up as well-i have learned that when you start putting a time limit on these babies, they seem to get even more stubborn-
i would just leave them be-
i tried an ultrasonic/cool mist-i had alot of problems-perlite is much more stable-
i would wait at least 10 more days to have mushies-and that can even mean waiting 9 days to see your first pin-
but the worth is well worth it-
check into getting a flourscent instead-they can be gotten fairly cheap and will save you big bucks probably on your power bill
if ya wanna consider selling that HPS(bulb, and ballast)
p.m. me ill take it off ya hands probably

The top lids on the containers are not clear. And I only have a 70 w hps (I was growing just a few plants). Thanks...

Thanks for the feedback. Hopefully because my light is only 70 watts it's not baking them. I might just take it out to be safe though.

You mentioned the possibility of having to "dunk" the cakes... how would I know that this is necessary and how would I go about doing it? I haven't heard of this technique...

First, use a thermometer INSIDE the terr.
That should tell you if it is too hot. Ha
And, you cannot put a halide bulb in unless you get a conversion bulb.
I dont know what would happen if you put a halide bulb into a socket hooked to a sodium ballast, but I assume it wouldnt be good.
