If a large enough Solar flare hit the earth, the poles could very well flip.

now im talking about a massive massive discharge from the sun here, larger than anything we have ever seen, but it is theoretically possible.

i doubt it, but who knows.

the magnetic poles of the earth come from convection within liquid iron core of the earth. This flow changes constantly and can result in the location of the poles wandering of even switching position.

I don't know how much solar discharge it would take to change the flow of iron in the earth, but I would guess that there might not be much left of the earth to have any sort of magnetic pole.

im sure the earth would still be here, were quite a distance away from the actual flares that the sun throws out. the radio waves and charged particles are what hit us.

from what i understand is that if you hit a magnet with a strong enough electrical charge, you can indeed cause it to flip its poles.

its the same principal on a larger scale.

They are already flipped. Opposites attract, so when a compass reads north, its really pointing to the south pole.

You can also flip a magnets poles by turning the magnet so that it is facing the other way if you hit it hard enough with your finger.

If a solar flare large enough to flip the magnetic poles hits the earth, we won't be alive long enough to care...

Im no geologist but im pretty sure that the poles remain relatively stable as far as N-S orientation goes. I thought it was the electrical field lines that become twisted, resulting in a spontaneous flip of the poles. However, im pretty sure this is all still debated and our knowledge of the earth's core still leaves something to be desired.

other things that can flip the magnetic poles
cancer
snakes on the plane
pornography
going back in time and killing hitler
cholesteral
wearing a pointy hat
the earth turning upside down
the earth staying how it is and the reast of the solar system turning upside down

I can't think of what they are called, but grains in oceanic basalt shows the orientation of the magnetic pole that was present at the time they were formed. They show that the poles reverse every million years or so.
