Do my cakes look ok? (pics! 1024 res)
    #5986957 - 08/22/06 03:36 PM (18 years, 4 months ago)

I have some stuff growing on my cakes, I think they're cubensis since they're all growing on the four injected points and that's it so far.

But they're not the bright snow white as I have seen described here and in guides. In natural light, when I view my cups, the growth looks more lightly greyish and pinkish in color than bright white. I took some pictures, both with flash and natural light from my window and desk lamp. The flash makes the growth look white, the non flash... well you can see.

What do you think? Are these ok?

Ouch, I tried searching for this "contam" but I haven't found anything similar. Anyone know what it is?

Ugh, all 6 cups, every bit of growth exhibit the same color, texture, etc. Not one is different. I've never seen that in the contam list or anything. Ugh.

there's 30,000 types of molds in this world... to say exactly what it is would be guessing.

the important fact is they're there, and that sucks. :frown:

many molds grow white and then develop spores that are colored - green mold being an example... if you let them go for a few days it might reveal itself.  but its not worth waiting to find out just for your curiosity because you'll be letting billions of spores into your home should you try to clean the jars and save 'em... i'd dump them out outdoors now while its sort of early in the game and wash them out all together... safest bet is to throw the whole jars away i know but i always re-use mine because i hate wasting things...  just empty them carefully with your face covered, far from your growing area.  you dont wanna breathe the stuff and you dont want it in your home.

the way it grew in an exact pattern from the syringe inoculations and so consistently in all your jars makes me sort of lean towards a contam'd syringe in this case...

i think you can clearly see the frontier between myc and the mold. Mold >>>> Myc

Sorry friend, seems contaminated. My first time I had the same problem, the mold that began growing did not match anything I new so I posted and I was told to wait and see for clearer signs. I did. Sure enough it was mold. I had the same pinkish stuff ***

Give it some time if you can. Ive had jars that looked like that and the myc overcame the contams... i usually throw them in an outdoor patch buried in some potting soil. I've actually gotten some good results from cakes that I thaught would be useless. Dont know if i'd use them indoors tho.

That little spot isn't the problem exotic, its all of the fluffy stuff. It's not completely white. It's pinkish gray.

I just got home, bought the Presto 8qt PC for $40 at Wally World. I'll wait for tomorrow when I can see outside before trashing everything I have.

Fark, I got the spores from Lil Shop of Spores, seemed reputable. They were creeper, part of a 4-pack of creeper/b+/mexicube/z strain. I hope the rest are ok. Do you guys think it was the syringe itself?

it most likely wasn't the syringe if you got it from a reputable vendor. i'm guessing you boiled the jars, since you just picked up the PC? how long did you boil, and how long did you let the jars cool before inoculation?

I started the rolling boil then put the jars in separated by a cermaic plate. I turned it down to close to a simmer for 2 hours. Then the jars cooled overnight. When i came home from work, i inoculated all 6. Fast forward today, they are all slightly pinkish-grayish but not super-white. ALL OF THEM. Not one piece looks off the ordinary. nothing strange growing except for pink-gray like you see in my pics....

But the weird shit is, if i use the flash on my camera, it looks white and perfect. But from you guys, that is not the case. Should it be super white no matter what lighting condition?

My confidence is pretty low right now. It's my first grow and all my cups are the same colour. I went out and dropped cash on a PC and all that shit, but it's still weird to me that the ENTIRE COLONY is the same damn thing I posted in pictures. I will start a Z strain tomorrow with the seemlingly easy pf tek i tried to follow.

The problem is... I see no other contam thus far except for what I posted. Everything is golden if the creeper strain turn pinkish-gray, but i doubt that. I'm in the dumps...

Did everything feature the same color?

Because every injection spot started growing the same color...

wait wait wait.

I personally don't think that looks contam'd, it could just be the brf and verm mixed and wet - That happened to a few of my jars and it looked like that, and they came out fine. Sit tight, it could just be you putting too much water in the mix.

Hmm, I'm getting mixed opinions. I think I will just leave these in a bucket and put them aside for a week to see what it does. I checked them this morning before work (at work now) and they are all still growing and still the same color. I will go get another 6 pack of glasses and start a new batch with my new PC. I might even try a quart of WBS as well.

Uh yeah, it doesn't look contaminated to me. It does look VERY wet inside the jars. I'm gonna throw in my vote to watch those jars for a few more days. I think you just got too much water in the jars.

Ok, it's been a week or so since I've posted this. All six jars are now completely covered with the same slightly pink growth shown in the pics. Some parts on the pink feature bright white round spots.

Just to play it safe, I took one cake out and cut it in my sink. The growth on the inside when I made thin slices looked alot whiter, like all of the pink is on the outside. I smelled the slices and it smelled distinctively mushroomy... as if I cut open a fresh carton of white buttons at the supermarket.

No weird colours on any of the slices.

What do you all think about it now? Thanks for the responses, helping out a n00b.

well...

judging from the initial pictures i would have said contam'd.. the last two looked to be bacterial in nature even

but if it smelled right and looked right on the inside, it probably is.  maybe there was a contaminate at a point but the mycelium faught and won.  its rare in the jar colonizing stage but it happens.  it could have been discoloration if the jars had crap in them to begin with and weren't properly cleaned... taking wild guesses here as to an explanation i dunno.

contams often prevent colonization from completing.  if yours completed colonization and smells like mushrooms like you say, well its very likely ok.  the only way you're going to know with certainty i suppose is to try fruiting them and see what happens, time will tell you for sure.

Hmm, that sentence just reminded me of what I did... or didn't do.

I bought those 6oz glasses from Ikea in a 6 pack.  They were just sitting in the open air in the store.  I brought them home and I didn't clean the glasses out with bleach and/or detergent.  I just immediately filled the glasses, I didn't even think about cleaning at the time and now I look back and realized I should've.

But even if the minute particles of dust in there contains some other mold spore that survived the steamer, wouldn't it run rampant and grow all over... instead of the 4-point injection pattern that grew?  Or maybe the Ikea store dust caused the mycelium to become irratated on the sides of the glass and they turned pink?

Questions, questions, questions!

Anyway, I'm starting WBS and another set of pf teks tonight.  I'll let these 5 pink jars hang out near my computer's exhaust fan for heat.  It's been strangely cold out in Philly recently.

Also, I said there are bright white dense round spots sporadically growing on some of my cakes that are the most advanced. They stand out considerably because the rest of the stuff is pinkish. What is it? I'll try to get pictures as I keep following up.

Looks fine to me. If your going to do cakes you might just wanna spawn that one in its own container. Dense white spots are fine... It shouldnt be pink but ide spawn them anyway. Newbs are allways worried... You shouldnt once you realize the life cycle of these things it makes it 100X easier.
