War and an alien civilization.

Now just think for a moment how easily would we be at war if we one day stumble across an alien civilization. Maybe in another galaxy there is the same thing happening, war. What if this alien civilization goes to war with the Earth. Will we survive?
On top of that, if we believe there is alien life out there, why aren't we making full attempts to colonize outerspace. I mean we have space stations, etc. But what about educating the kids in school with say Nasa programs, where we study outerspace, and learn to become astranauts. If they added that into schools and then watch society slowly change.
We shall lead our race to outerspace!
Peace, Droz

at this point in time it is impractical to go to space to colonize. you figure, if we can colonize anything, it would be the moon, or at best mars.. ok so great. the aliens will just come to mars and destroy us because we have no means of defense because we would still be trying to colonize.
if they come to earth, all it would take is for the aliens to drop a nuke like device on russia, usa or china, and we would wipe ourselves out.
i don't think aliens would bother with an inhabited planet unless it had resources that they absolutely needed. otherwise, they can travel the galaxy looking for a planet that has yet to grow life.

Yes, if there are aliens, i bet they'd be smarter than the american government...
They wouldn't just go to war for no reason. We might though..

I don't think space travel is important right now. I mean, we can't even solve our own problems here on Earth.
And like you said, if we were @ war w/ aliens, they could probably easily destroy us.

I would trust that a species with the technology to destroy us would at least have a bit of compassion. Who knows, maybe we're being watched upon by advanced neutral civilizations.

we would have to also wonder if an an "alien invasion" would be real, or be staged via various technologies we have.
because why would aliens invade? mankind isn't exactly "meant" for spacetravel anyways, why would aliens even exist in the physical ways that we think they would?

king georges' army might as well be aliens compared to the iraqi resistance.. similarly if actual aliens were to invade the earth...

great point
Now would we go to the alien planet or would they come here to fight
and if they can make it here then you know their technology will cream us

every other civilization in our universe is/was going through the same stages of evolution we are. you don't get deep into the technological age (and into galactic/universal travel) without first having our collective consciousness evolve past the power and corruption stage we're at now and into the age of ethics. i firmly believe that all races that have mastered space travel have ethics. when we too reach this stage, our neighbors will be coming out of the woodwork to meet us and share knowledge.

Our ethics tell us it is acceptable to kill a species of a lesser intelligence (ie killing various animals for sport/food or to make way for our homes), who is to say that a superior alien race will have no problem with killing us.

possible.
but what if our problems on earth aren't able to be solved.
what if our problems are the result of clinging to our "mother".
our refusal to "grow up"?
maybe it's time to move on.

Yes, I would think it's more reasonable to assume the farsighted and determined alien civilization that got here would be too pragmatic to have 'compassion' for us. Their fundamental behavior, like ours, would be guided and "designed" by their evolutionary history. Perhaps they will have progressed to the point of realizing that if they have a purpose, it must be to further the integral evolutionary goals behind their existence.
Even if they don't rationalize it this way and knowingly dedicate their intellect towards propagation, their being here showcases their true nature.
Barring some perceived utility in keeping us alive, they'd probably casually brush us aside for their own ends.

If humanity and some alien civilization went to war, it is immensely likely that there would be virtually no war at all. Considering the time scales involved, an alien civilization would likely be either far more advanced then ourselves, or far less advanced.
Think Cortez Vs. the natives. Cortez was only a few hundred years ahead, technologically. Yet there was no question who would be the victors in that confrontation.
Consider what would happen if a civilization that was several million years in advance of another might do if the technologically inferior race happened to piss them off. It would be like me stepping on an ant hill. There might well be absolutely no casualties on the side of the more advanced civilization, and only a small expenditure of resources.
Of course, it's entirely possible that we'd not at all require the same types of habitats, and that we could even colonize within the same solar system without stepping on each others toes, due to different planetary (environmental) requirements.
