Tyvek vs Filter Disks?
    #5984097 - 08/21/06 03:18 PM (18 years, 4 months ago)

Hello all you wonderful people,

Got a question for you regarding a better filter system for the jars' air exchange. Now I wanted to buy the filter disks however, they get expensize 46$$ for 100 disks. A much cheaper solution is Tyvek cloth, it's a tightly spun filter-like material that is used between house siding for air exchange. To all of you with more knowledge about this than me, what is the better choice here?

I'm not sure about the specs of either material and how much microns is in between the strings/fiber. Any opinion, advice, comment will be most appreciated.

Thanks all,
I.T.

Almost everybody in the shroomery know about and use tyvek. Filter disk is expensive for nothing

Agreed, Tyvek is free from the post office And works just as well as a fliter disk.

you can inoculate through tyvek, and seal the hole with micropore tape.

you cannot inoculate through a filter disc.

If you have a flowhood, go with filter discs,
they can be reused thousands of times.

if not, go with tyvek, just keep it dry.

yeah, I mean:

remove the foil immediately after the pc process.

if you see any moisture on the tyvek, wipe it immediately
with a paper towel sprayed with isopropyl.

put the tyvek over the lid, not under it.

make the holes in the lid very small so wet grains can't get through them.

keep the jars upright while colonizing with no added humidity.

you know, keep it dry.

you may want to leave the bands a bit loose during pc,
and tighten them after cooling.

yes you can pressure cook with it on. but leave lid rings loose so escaping steam has somewhere to go than besides through the filter material, and the jar top should be covered with a piece of foil to prevent condensation on the PC lid from dripping back down onto it. when PC'ing is done allow to cool somewhat with the PC lid still on, then tighten down the rings before removing the foil.... then obviously allow to cool completely over several hours before inoculating it.

The above is good security advice. But I never cover my jars with foil when PC'ing, or leave the lid loose. And contams rates are never worse than 99.99% clean jar. Nor is my water content off in the jars after PC'ing.

Now again, cream's advice is the ultra safe way to go. I have just never had a need to go to those extremes in 3 year of clutivation.

I've used just about every filter type made over the years, but always come back to my synthetic filter disks for a very good reason. They're ten times thicker than tyvek, with a smaller micron size. Mine are made from PFTE specifically for gasses and filter down to .05 micron, which is much smaller than any laminar flow hood filters out.

They're infinitely reusable. I have some that are ten years old and covered with rust and other stains, but still 100% effective after many hundreds of uses.

I use the regular mason lid upside down, so the metal is in contact with the glass(for easy removal-no sticking), with the filter disk on top and the ring over that, covered with foil to prevent condensation from dripping in. You should always use a foil cover because the lid of the PC 'rains' during the entire cycle onto the jars below and can ruin your moisture content if not covered. This allows me to tighten down the lid fully tight before PC'ing so I don't have to open the PC as it cools. I like to let it sit overnight and remove the jars when they've cooled to room temperature.

Personally, I think paying 46 cents for a pre-cut, perfectly fitting synthetic filter disk that you'll use virtually forever is a bargain. In fact, it would be a bargain at three times that price.

Thanks for the great advice everyone.

I have always used lids with my pressure cooking techniques and the tinfoil as well. However, this time I am trying popcorn for a substrate instead of Brown rice flour, hence I am using the POPCORN TEK>>> http://www.shroomery.org/index.php/par/25049 >>>> In this tek it is reccomended that when you are pressure cooking you use the rings and the filters but NOT THE LIDS. As far as I understand you guys are using the filters with the lids..or did I get that wrong.

Also: Thanks for the advice in loosening the lids I sometimes get extra moisture in my jars and this may help.

I.T.

Right. Without the lid, your corn would dry out before the jar colonized. Use three or four holes in the lid under the tyvek or filter disk.

RR do you inject through your filter disk or do you have to remove
the lid completely in a glove box or flowhood?

For G2G obviously the lid is removed?
