If the jars receive direct heat from the bottom of the pot they could shatter and/or lose a lot of moisture which will dry out your substrate and cause no growth.

Don't leave your lids loose. That will just allow the steam to enter the jar and soak your substrate.
Your jars are not going to shatter, they were designed for the job.

I've been using a pot & boiling, no issues... I can't find a cheap pressure cooker in the area..

But take my advice (Already learned it)... when using a rag, make sure it is
a) Clean
b) White and clean
c) NOT DARK COLOURS!!!

The dye ran and stained the pot perm....

I thought that using the microwave tek pf-style (birdseed substrate) would work. I don't see why it wouldn't....could anyone shed some light on this?
