A lock is just a piece of metal

Just a friendly reminder that while you should be locking up your stuff, you shouldn't rely solely on locks to keep your activities hidden:

You used to need a lot of practice to pick a lock, but it seems that it's getting easier all the time to open locks without a key.

Bumping has been around for at least 50 years. Bumping will not work with sidebar locks, such as medco.

if someone comes across a mysterious box, it's natural for them to want to take a peek inside if it's quick and easy to do so, but it takes an almost pathological suspiciousness (or criminal intent) to break into a locked box without reason.

Kind of... the real difference is that a bump key scrubs across all the tumblers at the exact same moment. Another difference is in the tools... with bumping, I need a bump key that fits the side wards of the lock while scrubbing will work with any pick set that fits the lock.

I would like to see this eleven old girl make the bump key... that would be impressive. If you have the talent to use a key, then you can use a bump key... the skill level is about the same. A five year old could bump open a lock.

That's why my quickly and shoddily made bump key didn't open my front door. Hmm I might have to try that one again...
Or else I have to face the fact that I have even less skillzorz than an eleven year old with no interest in lock picking.
(Although I had no trouble scrubbing locks when I was a kid, especially on cheaply made bike locks)

I have never tried to make one by hand... just set the key cutting machine to all nines and let her rip. It takes a bit of practice to get a feel for the proper force to use with the mallet and the timing of the turn, but it is not difficult by any stretch. It only took me three tries to bump open my first lock, but I had a good bump key. Remember, you have to reduce the collar (and tip) of the key so that it can go half a tumbler further into the lock, and you have to start with the key pulled half a tumbler out of the lock before you strike it.
