Tripping in the Paris Catacombs
    #596417 - 04/02/02 10:59 AM (22 years, 1 day ago)

Does anyone here desire to trip in the Catacombs hidden deep under the streets of Paris France?

Does anyone know someone who has tripped in the Paris Catacombs?

What happened to them?

Did they see ghosts?

Did they get lost?

Were they caught by the "Catacops"?

Tell your tales

Well I don't believe in the devil, but I do believe in ghosts, so it's possible that I could see a ghost.

I just thought it would be creepy as hell to go tripping in the catacombs. Getting in there would be difficult(it's illegal to go down there). I would be more afraid of the cops(catacops) getting me than anything. They patrol the catacombs daily I believe.

On a creepy side note, I was watching this show about the catacombs on TV, and they talked about how they had found a video camera deep in there. They looked at the tape, and what happened was that there was a guy video taping in the deep dark tunnels. He only had his light from his camera to show him the way. The last thing you see of of this guy is when he just puts the camera down for apparently no reason at all, and just starts RUNNING into the darkness. The host of the show said that there was no possible way he could have found his way out of there without a light. Noone knows what possessed him to put down his only source of light and run. The camera eventually ran out of batteries.

When were they originally constructed, and for what purpose?
I have heard of secret tunnels that run underneath the Thames river linking the houses of parliment to certain buildings around london.

The Paris Catacombs were originally constructed to house many dead people (poor people during the black plague [or something similar]) who were too poor to afford graves... They buried them in the catacombs. Many parts of it are unexplored, but there is a group of people who go out of their way to map the tunnel system... It is illegal to go down into them (well, there IS a tour I believe...) but I think it would be the scariest thing to trip down there... Too many bones :S

Wow! What a beautiful mindfuck that could be. Realy I dont see why you would be scared when you think about it, you didnt kill anybody why would ghosts want to fuck with you? I would love any info you have about them. Are there any catacombs you can tour? Mayby in another country? I can only imagine how strange a job it would be to be a catacop. For the people who are afraid can you imagine facing your absolute worst fear? How wonderful would your normal life seem by comparison. Please post some more info so I can stop rambling.

My GOD what a terrible idea....

First of all, I'mw sure it would unbelievably easy to get lost in there. People have gotten lost and disapeared in those things while they were sober...

Second, if you went into a environment like that tripping, you would be setting yourself up to "see" a ghost. who knows what you'd see, perhaps pure terror.

Also, i bet it smells like ass in there.

Oh yeah i almost forgot. I was watching one of those catacombs shows on TLC or some crap, and since they've never been fully explored and go so deep underground, one of the theroies is that if you go deep enough they will eventually lead to a doorway to hell or another dimension, like a limbo or something. Thats a comforting thought, of course being down there tripping i'd imagine you could find a door way to hell quite easlily in your own mind.

it is a novel idea though i guess, a really shitty one though.

This is probably the best idea I've heard all year. I wouldn't do it without at least one sober partner though. But still, that's fucking beautiful, beats the shit out of sitting around and watching Yellow Submarine, or doing some other familiar shit for the 50th time. Now I just need the air fare...

The Catacombs being 30 mins from my home, i can tell that there are some punk-like rave-like parties in there.
Never went myself to any party down there, but already went visiting at night with a foaf, scary, better have a guide.....(illegal but you just risk to pay like 20$-30$ if caught) U can also visit them legally during the day.
But the legal visit is only a tiny part of what is available.
There are about 300 kms of tunnels under Paris.
They were first digged to make stone blocks to build Paris's houses.
There is a real network of people around the Catacombs, like a semi-secret community (not secret cause not hidden), that explore the network of tunnels, share info, maps and good places and initiate catacombs newbies.
If you wanna see more pics check: (sites in french)

i remember watching crazy shit aboub it on tv, how theres miles and miles under there, like it kinda spirals downward in a big maze. I remember them one time exploring it, deep, deep in the maze and they found a video camera and when they watched it, it was these 2 early 20 year old men, lost, freaking out crying. They didnt know what the fuck to do, and eventually like 3 hours of being lost and scared the camera just drops and they guy takes off running. They didnt know who the men where, or if they even made it out.....like that blair witch prodject movie. Ide be sooooooooo fuckin scared, too scared. And those crazy rooms full of skeletons, and they dont know how deep it goes but they say under it all, is the door to hell. Too creapy

Yeah, I told that same story, but I don't remember there being two men. All I know is they said the guy MUST have died because his camera was his only source of light.

That looks fucking INTENSE! I'd love to go down there with a tour and a bunch of people (I'm always comforted when roaming creepy locations at night and frying if I'm with a few people). I'd keep the dose low-medium though, I'd hate to be down there flipping out on 5 tabs or too much shrooms. Around here we've got North Head, which is a small subsection of tunnels that were used to defend our city in the war, not that impressive, but some parts are really creepy. They say there's HEAPS of tunnels hidden under the top level, the tunnels that are open for public are really just near the surface.
Lucky Paris....

How do they know his camera was his only source of light?

....anyway, not a fucking snowball's chance in hell would I trip in there. Fuck no. It would be like tripping in a haunted house, which is one of the single most terrifying things I can imagine.
