I don't really know what psychedelics do, but I have a few theories I'm kicking around.

At the metaphysical level: They could be like the defogging of a window in the wall that separates the physical world we live in with a higher dimensional realm. The molecule and your synapses are the metaphorical lock and key at the borderline between the two worlds.

At the chemical level: They could be just a mental enhancer, a way to assist your mind in delving into uncharted territory. Where you chose to go with these mental chains unlocked is up to you. You could chose to visit higher dimensions or you could marvel at the new sensations afforded to you.
