I don't think so, because I would think the water would just keep being soaked up by the substrate, making it too wet.

If your substrate were of the right porosity, and it was fed from underneath, the water might wick into the cakes. However, if the resivoir is above the cakes, they will become oversaturated.

If one of those cakes got contaminated, it would be in the
other two before you knew it. If you add a peice of drinking
straw, sunk to the center of the cake, with the plug removed,
and fill the straw with water, it will have all the water it can
use and takes about 7-8 drops a day to refill the straw.
Tried it on two cakes for a week, then added them to the rest
of the cakes. Bigger mushrooms faster, but I have a feeling
it will spend all the nutrients in the cake faster.
Hope that helps.

Instead of a resevoir with holes, make it a big soda bottle, make a small drip hole in the bottom, when you want to feed the shrooms just take off the cap, then gravity can pull the water slowly to the cakes, bacteria could be a problem either way though, maybe you should just try injections, with injections you can be precise, sterile.

Gravity would cause flooding. If you really want to develop a no maintenance watering Tek I suggest doing a web search for watering, plants, wick, wicking. There are many methods involving wicking water through a cotton string or a cotton wick like you can find at a craft store. If you want something more professional, you may want to take a look at Doctor Plant's Plant Sitter. It has a plastic tube to carry water and a ceramic sensor, no batteries required. You can just buy 3 ceramic sensors instead of buying the kit, which contains a ploastic water reservior. Buy the sensor pack of 3 for 10 bucks, and use a soda bottle or something. Here's a link to a Real Player video demonstration (it's the second demo):

Obviously, whatever you decide to do, it'd have to be sterilized. Let us know what you come up with.

That's a solution if you want to make a more automated setup rather than the straw, this way you don't have to open the terrarium to refill, but if you want to make it work you have to add a tap or valve on the reservoir exit wich will control the water flow into the cakes or else they can drown fast.
