Misperception
    #597728 - 04/03/02 02:35 PM (21 years, 11 months ago)

There is too much noise in many of these threads, so I will break it down as simply as possible. I have deliberately left out any "object" to avoid the usual emotionalism.

Do some people misperceive some things and events? YES or NO

Is it possible that you or I (as a subset of "some people") misperceive some things and events? YES or NO

Does the misperceiver know that he is misperceiving? YES or NO

Will some misperceivers deny their misperception even when shown to be in error? YES or NO

frater swami
could it be that your perception that there is too much noise on these threads a misperception to some people?
isn't it all relative? we all see things in a slighty (or in some cases vastly) different way, which contributes to the sense of legion that we enjoy?

I have some better questions:

If a truth exists in someone's mind that cannot be disproven by anyone else is it true? YES or NO

Can you even make a judgement on its veracity? YES or NO

Yes, obviously misperception exists. I don't think that is the crux of the argument though. I think the question is on what basis can you conclude misperception has taken place.

Let's separate misperception from opinion. You and I go to see a stand-up comedian. I find him to be hilarious and you find him to be a bore. That is opinion (like my use of the word "noise"). We can both be "right" in this case.

On our way home, we see unusual lights in the sky. You see an alien spacecraft and I see the Fuji blimp. One or both of us is wrong. It is NOT relative. The object DOES have a unique identity apart from the viewer.

*Sigh* It seems impossible to move forward. We have covered this before in great detail. Must be time to revive the "Swami-Rock-in-the-Back-of-the Head- Challenge" where you disbelieve away in objective reality whilst I give you a good crack to "prove" objective reality.

Do some people misperceive some things and events?
Yes

Is it possible that you or I (as a subset of "some people") misperceive some things and events?
Yes

Does the misperceiver know that he is misperceiving?
Depends upon the individual and the individual circumstances.

Will some misperceivers deny their misperception even when shown to be in error?
Yes, their ego reasserts itself even for those who claim they experience 'loss of ego.'

Thank you evolving. My work here is done.

Was that SO difficult, people? That is the crux of most of my replies.
