I think for something to be considered the next acid, it has to be more along the lines of a massive paradigm shift. The hallucinogenic seed has been planted. So whats next? Timothy Leary often alluded to the internet being the next acid, in that it allows an individual a direct link to global consciousness.
If I could hypothesize as to what the next acid would be, I would guess it would be something more along the lines of some psycho/spiritual/social trend, of which already seems to be underway with the sudden boom of "spirituality". Sure we are still riding slowly fading ripples of the psychedelic explosion, but a big splash has to be right around the corner. At this point, that could be anything. Maybe there is a chemical existing somewhere, that creates an entirely new concept of what a psychedelic experience is. Just like the contrast between "reality" and tripping, perhaps there is such a contrast between currently existing psychedelic substances, and some yet unidentified compound.
I would love for salvia to be that compound, but in my eyes, it is merely another step in an already underway process, seemingly catalyzed by LSD.

I've successfully used salvia sublingually many times for lasting mild effects which were trippy but not mind-blowing. On a positive note, I don't experience any anxiety effects by this route while I do when I smoke the leaves (normal and extract-enhanced).
It certainly beats consuming salvia as a strong tea, which gives me simple strong sedative effects without noticeable trippiness (save for a feeling of "merging with the floor or bed").

I don't think of salvia as the "next acid" because cultural conditions are significantly different now and salvia's general lack of strong euphoric effects means it will never be as popular as Acid and similar hallucinogens.
The mysterious Sally Divine is a great entheogen in my opinion and I'm sure it'll maintain a small but significant fanbase among hallucinogen enthusiasts even if it is illegalized in most areas. This is probably similarly the case with Fly Agaric.
