1/4 innocs produced results, one side.
    #5976115 - 08/18/06 03:01 PM (17 years, 5 months ago)

Okay so this is my first time doin this, ive been lookin at it for a while, read up some and decided to go for it. Got some headshop ecuador spores, usin brf and vermiculite. Now, its a week in and the problem is that only one side has shown some signs of germination but the other sides have absolutely nothing. Should I just wait and see what happens with it, or re-inoculate the other sides, or what?

wait and see what happens.

sometimes some innoc points take longer than others to get going.

sometimes they don't go at all, but the cake will still colonize as long as 1 made it.

its normal when making up a batch of cakes that 100% of your innoc points don't make it.

re-inoculating is only increasing your risk for contamination and i'd advise against it.

you're fine all my brf jars from my last grow started on one side, even though i used four inoculation points.. as long as myclium is there it should spread to the rest of the jar as long as no contamination occurs....

Okay its been a little while, the one side has taken over that side, but only that side. I see another little fuzzy bit comin out from the other innoc point but its tiny. It hasnt grown in the past few days, and part of its going slightly off color, Ide say a little tint of brown on the white fuzz. Whats the problem? Is it contaminated? I included two pictures, the first one is with flash, second is without(keep in mind the reflection of my light was in that shot, but look at the brownish stuff around that area).

On a better note, I started another cake and its got 7 or so points that inoculated properly.

1st pic looks fan-fin'-tastic

2nd pic is much darker contrast...harder to tell.

I've seen lots of brownish stuff before. It's never caused a real problem. Mabey dark Myc Piss... mabey a weak mold.

Greens, bright yellows, reds, black... Thats the worst stuff.

Give it time to see how it goes. I'd bet you are fine.

Try posting a brighter pic. Irregarless you are probably fine.

I did the same thing 3 maybe 4 out of 5 contamed
try to leave them alone as much as you can
theyre gonna take longer to colonize so there's more chance of them getting contamed. also dont tip the jars. if dry verm layer slides around too much then you leave your substrate exposed to possible contams.
also this probably happened because you didn't shake up the syringe between each inoculation point

I now have another growing little jar that was made 2 weeks after this one and is growing much faster. Ive decided that I should take the tape off the top and see what that does. There is quite a bit of water inside the jars, the condensation on the side. The new jar also has this yellowy shit going on, maybe worse. Is this discoloration related to too much moisture? If so, is there anything I can do to reduce it?

the discoloration can occur if the mycelium touches where water has condensed. its somewhat normal... some condensation certainly is. taking the tape off the jars was wise, it will speed things along and perhaps allow some of the excess moisture to escape.

as for the first one there, if it's stopped dead in its tracks i'd give a sniff. if it smells like anything (especially sweet, sour, or like garbage) you might have a bacterial contamination. bacterial contams would stop colonization dead in its tracks, would prevent spores from germinating if it moved in quickly, and would also cause a yellowing/brown tint around the edges of colonization... all things you've described. so it could be bad news.
