Birthdays
One cake looked done last week so I opened it, and took off the vermiculite. I really couldn't tell if the inside was fully colonized or not, so I used a clean spood and cut out about 1/2 (I don't think I needed to do that) and broke it up in a baggy.
I cleaned out the jar and wiped with alcohol and let it dry. I places the broken cake into the bottom and added 1/2 inch of alien casing. I misted it, put the lid back on, and stuck in the incubator for a week.
Another cake also look colonized, but this time I waited an extra 5 days before birthing. I did the basic birth, cold dunk, and roll and placed it in my poor man's pod. I kept it there and 3 days, fanning 4 times a day. I could see condonsation so humidity was OK, but the cake looked a little dry and no signs of pinning and any change for that matter.
I built the 1/2 martha and moved the cake inside. I endured the soggy martha syndrom for 2 days - the cake looked very wet and I could tell water was dropping down on it. I added a plastic slant above the cake. This helped, but soggy martha syndrom continued to get the top of the cake wet. I recently got the ultrasonic on the timer, build a wax paper tent, and it is much better, but the cake still look a little wet, but better.
Since it's my first cake, I really have know idea what knots or pins look like, but it's been a week and the only thing I see is a little myc growth, maybe a few knots, but not sure, and no pins. But it's only been one week so I think that is fine.
Here are pics of this cake:

Now the jar that I cased was incubating for a week and I saw it 2 days ago. Myc had just reached to top of the casing, recolonized the bottom really well, and looked great. I threw it in the fridge for 24 hours and a friend stuck it in the "Method 3 Fruiting Chamber". I'll see it today and cover the outside of the jar with electrical tape.
I though waiting for colonization was going to be the hardest part, but pinning is worse - I guess when you get this close to fruit, it gets too exciting.
I just really hope I have some fruit new week in time for my vacation.
