5 days, nothing

I have eight innoculated jars that have been incubating for five days, and as of yet I have seen no evidence of mycelium growth. I am using a fish tank heater inside a large plastic cup for heat. With the thermostat on the heater turned up to ninety-two degrees, the highest temperature I can get is about seventy-six degrees. I know this is below optimal temperature, but I was wondering if this could be what is causing the delay. Also, when mixing my substrate I used tap water, not distilled water, as the MMGG did not suggest one way or the other. I boiled the jars once, and forgot to put a lid on the pot I was using. So I boiled them again, this time with the lid in place. Did this dry them out too much? If so, is there a chance that the jars could fully colonize and I could case them to restore proper moisture? I have been routinely checking the jars, and have noticed no contamination. Do you think they might be OK and I shouldn't worry yet? Have I made any grave errors and sabotaged my project before it even got off the ground? Any advice/questions/comments/rude remarks would be greatly appreciated.

Give them up to two weeks before you start to worry. My friend has never had it take more than two weeks for germination to occur, but I have read that it can take up to a month with old spores.

I had some hawaiins that took 10 days before I noticed anything at all. All my other strains were finished by the time they just started, but once they did they took off and were finished in a week.

Monkey, if you want to get the optimum temp, you could get a plastic rubbermaid container (or something like it) and put some water in it, and set the jars in with the heater in the water set on 85 or so. I did that, and the jars just took off :-) Good luck

Patience young grasshopper. 76?F is a bit cool for the spawn run (best 84-86?F.) It may take a bit longer. Also if the spores were old then it may take a bit longer. The tap water shouldn't make a difference. Just keep your nose peeled for any odd smells, if there is any bacterial contamination, you'll smell it before you see it.
Good Luck!
